"Faith, Certainty, and the Presidency of George W. Bush" Cover Story "Without A Doubt"
The New York Times Magazine ^ | October 17, 2004 | Ron Suskind

Posted on 10/17/2004 6:49:24 AM PDT by focusandclarity

"The disdainful smirks and grimaces that many viewers were surprised to see in the first presidential debate are familiar expressions to those in the administration or in Congress who have simply asked the president to explain his positions. Since 9/11, those requests have grown scarce; Bush's intolerance of doubters has, if anything, increased, and few dare to question him now. A writ of infallibility -- a premise beneath the powerful Bushian certainty that has, in many ways, moved mountains -- is not just for public consumption: it has guided the inner life of the White House."

..."The nation's founders, smarting still from the punitive pieties of Europe's state religions, were adamant about erecting a wall between organized religion and political authority. But suddenly, that seems like a long time ago. George W. Bush -- both captive and creator of this moment -- has steadily, inexorably, changed the office itself. He has created the faith-based presidency."

Last week the cover story for the New York Times's Magazine was "Really, What Does He Think? John Kerry and the Post- 9/11 World, Kerry's Undeclared War" by Matt Bai. This week the "equal time" is a NYT Magazine filled with "Bush bashing" articles (see soon to be posted article about "More Pie, Mr. President?" By JACK HITT in same magazine).

I ask, "Who with any sense of intelligence, independent thinking and ownership of one's own mind, can read this blatantly biased tripe day after day and not know it for what it really "is" ?"

The American people see the NY Times and the entire MSM for what they are. I suspect the same thing will happen this year at the polls as happened in 2002. The MSM was telling us all that GW Bush and the Republicans would not win back the senate and house would also go to the Democrats. Fact is, exactly the opposite occurred. At the end of the day, the American voter will vote for the person that will defend and protect America. And...that person is GW Bush!!! End of story!!!

This is definitely a SLAM against Bush AND those of deep christian faith. It is not in anyway, nasty, it is a smooth piece of work.

It's not W.'s intolerance of doubters that has him giving the look and the smirk. It's a normal reaction when someone is being truly stupid. It's called not having the patience or the real need to entertain fools. And I love that about him!

Really? Being equated with Islamic fundamentalists is not nasty?

"This is why George W. Bush is so clear-eyed about Al Qaeda and the Islamic fundamentalist enemy. He believes you have to kill them all. They can't be persuaded, that they're extremists, driven by a dark vision. He understands them, because he's just like them. . . ."

Apparently there are two distinct classes of individuals who seem to have an affinity for tripe: the undereducated and the overeducated.

My thoughts exactly when I was watching the first debate.

I called it "tortured angst" in my posting at the time because Kerry's debate maneuvering seem to makes his lies so credible to an audience capable of being influenced not by truth, but by "wily style". I wanted to scream, as I thought the "inner" President might have wanted to ( to save Americans from feeling safe under Kerry, and etc.), "No! He's lying!" (thus the word "angst" I used.)

A hopelessly lib friend of my Mom (who keeps trying to "convert" her) sent us this article. She was quite enthusiastic about it. I replied with a copy of Why the World Hates George W. Bush: The Secular Drive to Marginalize Faith

My mother-in-law for one, and we get into heated debates about this stuff at every meeting. It drives me nuts, and she insists that the MSM is all pro-Bush.

You'll probably hear of her in the not too distant future as her current art project has to do with "Demonstrating the stifling influence of churches in publicly visible locations". She's making a big map showing all the holes if churches are removed. The map is of part of Los Angeles.

I swear that its a direct of years of writings like this one that has driven her to her current hatred of anything that hints of religion, which of course includes our prez.

She drives me to drink!
