The commander of the UN peacekeepers in Haiti has linked a recent upsurge in violence there to comments made by the US presidential candidate, John Kerry. Earlier this year Mr Kerry said that as president he would have sent American troops to protect Jean-Bertrand Aristide who was ousted from power in February.
The Brazilian UN general, Augusto Heleno, said Mr Kerry's comments had offered "hope" to Aristide supporters. Much of the recent unrest has centred on areas loyal to Mr Aristide.
More than 50 people have died over the past fortnight.
'Unfounded'
Eight months ago the Bush administration withdrew all support for Mr Aristide and made it clear he should leave Haiti.
John Kerry called that "short-sighted" and said he would have sent troops to protect Mr Aristide, who was an elected leader.
Now General Heleno, says those comments have offered hope to Aristide's supporters that should Mr Kerry win the US election in November the former Haitian president might be restored to power.
General Heleno said any hopes of an Aristide comeback were "completely unfounded".

Without passing a global test, first?
All Kerry is good for is treason and death.
Kerry is dangerous to World Peace...
John Kerry is a geniune idiot. His Monday morning quarterbacking is costing people their lives. It's 1971 all over again
He did pass. He got an 'A' from them with their illegal campaign contributions.
Who'd of thought it? UN Peacekeepers for Bush? Even those guys can't stand Jean Keri.
Hehehehehehehe
How did that happen? I thought the man is smart.
He's already got the blood of 2.5 million SE Asians on his hands.
We all know that Clinton was a bumbling idiot as commander-in-chief, but at least he least he didn't copy the French as much as possible......just think of it, a French mind-set in charge of committing our miltary.
EXCELLENT! Idiot boy just HAS to shoot off the mouth of his!
When Clinton and Bush 41 were running for president, I remember that many Haitians were trying to make it to Florida on makeshift rafts. Bush tried to disuade more deadly journeys by announcing that any Haitians that made it here illegally would be returned to Haiti. Clinton stood by Jesse Jackson and said that when he was president, the Haitian refugees would be welcome in America.
Clinton won. I remember seeing on the news hundreds of Haitians trying to make the trip thinking that they would be welcomed with open arms. Many died and Clinton then returned to Haiti stating that the law forbid them from staying. Clinton lied, and Haitians died.
You're exactly correct about that, I remember that episode well
And they all beached the coast of Florida one week before the contest between Gore and Bush, too.
Kerry doing what Kerry does best...giving aide and comfort to the enemy. The Enemies of America, the Enemies of Freedom and the Enemies of all that is Good and Holy. (like life, justice, truth and more...)
New Bumper Sticker Idea:
Vote for Kerry/Edwards
We Aid and Comfort Enemies Both Foreign and Domestic
Asians are not too favorable about either of the US candidates. But then they do not have a say.
Asians want Bush ousted in US poll, but businesses wary of Kerry
Interesting link there. I of course disagree with the opinion of the Vietnamese communist official:
"The [Vietnam] communist government has studiously avoided commentary, but one Vietnamese diplomat told AFP: "I think Vietnam would support Kerry because he has travelled many times to Vietnam and he understands better the situation here than Bush, who is a war-mongering president."
This may be true in Hanoi, but the Vietnamese are also aware of 9/11 and they were deeply shocked by it, at least in the South. They are aware of Muslim terrorism - which is regularly covered on the nightly news - and don't want it to touch Vietnam as it has Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia. They call Osama bin Laden, "Wee Sa Ma", which means "The devil bin Laden."
Last fall there was a rumor down on the Delta that the police had caught 9 Arabic and Asian Muslims attempting to illegally cross from the Cambodian border at Chau Doc. This would have been before Hambali was caught in Thailand, but after Cambodia closed down its single Wahabbi madrassa and deported its "teachers" (the usual mix of Asians and Arabs). Hambali had made threats to attack the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, and had also spent several months plotting and scheming and hiding in Phnom Penh (ironically, at a backpacker hotel near the Wahabbi mosque there).
In any case this rumor came through semi-official sources in Chau Doc. It was never published in the papers, and no one knew what happened to the apprehendees. But Vietnam - like Cambodia - has a small Cham Muslim population and would no doubt take the severest of measures against any foreign Muslims attempting to stir-up trouble there. There are at least two Cham Muslim mosques in Saigon.
No, I think they'd approve of Bush for his clear willingness to fight against the evil that the Islamists represent and which the Vietnamese recognize is in their own neighborhood.
