Rush Limbaugh: Kerry's Mary Cheney Smear Was Calculated
Rush Limbaugh ^ | Oct. 15, 2004 | Rush Limbaugh

John Kerry says he's surprised by the flack over his lesbian comment. The media now in full gear scrambling to put out the fire on the Cheney lesbian comment made by John Kerry. He's not surprised by the flack over this. Folks, don't for a minute think -- you know, Edwards did it, Kerry did it. It means it's calculated. It means they've got some sort of focus group data that makes them think it's going to help them to do it. There's no other way to look at this. Kerry knows plenty of people who are lesbian and gay who could help him with anecdotal evidence answer the question, "Do you think it's a choice?"

He chose to put words in Mary Cheney's mouth and he doesn't even know her. The idea that he's surprised by this and he was only trying to be helpful. He was only trying to be nice? And I'll tell you what, this comment has drawn a backlash from both sides in Iowa. The Des Moines Register has a piece today that both Republicans and Democrats who heard this, did that flinch in the gut, just like I told you yesterday. The initial reaction that you had to it if you watched it and you saw it is the same that 90% of the people of this country had when they saw it, and no amount of spin is going to be able to change this. Because people's gut feelings are their gut feelings and the spin is only going to make it worse. You sit out there and say I was only trying to be nice, I was only trying to be helpful, if that's the case, talk about lesbians or gay people that you know, senator, who can actually tell you or can tell us that they've told you. But the idea of bringing Mary Cheney's name into it is nothing other than a political maneuver and everybody saw it for that, and it's not helped. And the fact that there's now a big scramble to try to put out this fire is evidence that it backfired on them.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

Jim McGreevey, who could have been a source for John Kerry, by the way, when he instead cited Mary Cheney on the Tempe stage ( transcript | video ) on Wednesday night. Jim McGreevey, who clearly Kerry knows, and he could have said you talk to Jim McGreevey and he'll tell you that it's not a choice. "McGreevey yesterday made his first appearance at a gay event since publicly acknowledging he's a gay American. McGreevey told reporters at the annual Empire State Pride Agenda Dinner, a civil rights fund-raiser, that he was going through a very challenging period in his life, and that today is a step forward in self-journey. 'This is an opportunity to be with friends and enjoy the evening,' said McGreevey, who attended the dinner but did not address the gathering."

Isn't it interesting that nobody asks McGreevey about gay marriage or discrimination against gays or even Mary Cheney? He shows up at these things and nobody wants to know what he thinks about these things. Just amazing.

"I think Kerry knew that the question was coming."

That was my impression too.

Of course the question was rigged by the libs otherwise Kerry couldn't have made the "score". Ditto with the gay question in the VP debate.

Well, if he knew the questions were coming, he should have had a better answer for the final answer than that he "married up" (aka for money). And the 'dead mother' spin.

What Kerry did was unconscionable and unforgivable. He should be held accountable for his words as well as his actions or lack of them. I cannot believe that Kerry is the best the Democrats had to offer as a Presidential Candidate. What barrel were they scraping the bottom of? A French barrel?

Rush's analysis as usual is insightful and right on the money on this.

Kerry showed himself to be a rude and calculating, and willing to step on anyone to get to the top. But he ended up really stepping in it on this one.

Another analogy would be..The candidates are discussing the major problem of obesity in America and it's costs to the health care system and President Bush says, " Obesity is a major problem in America today, take that blob Barbara Edwards for example....just trying to explain how families deal with the blob problem, thats all "

It was all calculated. Kerry to turn off christens. Mrs. Edwards to turn off Gay's and the media to call us homophobes. And seminar callers to pretend to be christens.

Of course it was planned.
I knew that right away.
Kerry's team thought Edwards did a grand job on VP Cheney
by mentioning his daughter.

Hell, Kerry could have mentioned Barney Frank.

This was only one of many cheap debating tricks that kerry used, he frequently used the "even person X, a Republican, thinks (along he lines of Kerry)" that you describe -

- his mis-representation about Bremers' comments
- his constant use of Republicans to make his claims
"I'll do what Reagan did" when in fact he opposed every single thing Reagan stood for ...
- he used Sensenbrenner and misquoted him, Sensenbrenner had to issue a press release
- Kerry's lies about Tora Bora and 'letting Osama Bin Laden go' and 'getting our eye off the ball' was refuted by Tommy Franks and CENTCOM generals.
- The attempt to put words in Mary Cheney's mouth was of a piece with that, but bringing in family members who didn't ask for 50 million people to know their private lives was rightly seen as tacky.
Family members are different than other public political figures. Kerry could have said Barney Frank, but he is trying to drive a wedge, obfuscate, and dissemble. Kerry's tried to move to Bush's right on issues - crazy disconnect from reality since he has a lifetime ACU rating of a mere 5% - but his goal is to fool voters.

The Kerry camp says it's 'fair game' because mary works on the campaign... excuse me, but the private lives of campaign workers is 'fair game'???

Notably Bush never used that, kept Kerry's past and family offlimits, and when he went after Kerry, BUSH USED KERRY'S OWN WORDS.

It's clear who is the more decent campaigner and human being.

Exactly! And it's all a part of an even bigger picture of Kerry's name-dropping which is second to only Ipecac for barf-inducement.
