A Photograph of You
Circa 1943 | Beatrice Lutzin

Posted on 10/16/2004 1:00:12 PM PDT by Michael121

A Photograph Of You

When the evening shadows gather,

After all my work is through,

I can’t keep my eyes from straying,

To a photograph of you.

There it rests upon my table,

Just the way you looked that day,

Ah! It seems it was but yesterday,

When I first heard you say.

Words of love that made me happy,

And made all my dreams come true,

But – tonight, I’m all alone with

Just a photograph of you.

For one day our country called you,

And you so bravely answered “here”

Oh! I’m proud of you, my soldier,

Yet I brush away a tear –

Cause I miss your cheery whistle,

Miss your footsteps on the stairs,

While I sit here dreaming – gazing,

At the photograph of you.

So I tiptoe to my window,

Kneel and wish upon a star,

As I pray to GOD to keep you safe,

No matter where you are.

Thus my heart is ever with you,

While I wait the long days thru,

And the dearest of all my treasures,

Is that photograph of you.

When the years have told their story,

And the world is once more free,

I’ll be waiting for you – darling,

There will still be you and me.

Then we’ll build our dreams together,

Hand in hand the long years thru,

But forever in my heart I’ll hold,

That photograph of you.

(From Beatrice Lutzin, NY 21 - to Sgt. Irving Simpson 22)

I just did a little investigative work - not only did Irving come home, but he and Beatrice got married and it appears they are married still! I was just so happy to see it, and it's a wonderful ending to their story.

May it be the story for so many others in this new war...

Oh, that's great. I do like happy endings. (And I think I'm gonna like Nov. 2)

Sorry for the vanity here but thank you for this post. This post strikes way home for me. I'm on the Abraham Lincoln as we sail into harms way to stop terrorist dead in their tracks. It is the Spouses and mothers of Service members that truly feel the agony of our being gone. For us its old hat. We know our jobs, We understand the consequences of our decisions to serve and put our life's on the line. We Serve because we want a better life for ourselves and our children. We Believe that the idea of a government of the people by the people for the people must survive. We Know that the tree of liberty can only be watered by the blood of patriots who are willing to shed their own blood to see that that tree stays strong.

But its our Spouses and mothers that truly make the sacrifices. Its the mothers worry that their son or daughter may not come home, and that they must berry their own flesh and blood. Its the Wife's Dread that they must raise their children alone. As I write this post my wife is at her parents house spending what little time she has left with a father dieing of Cancer and worrying about a sister who also suffers from this horrific disease. While what she needs in life right now is my being their for support and a shoulder to cry on I can not be there. I am not the only whose spouse must sacrifices. The true hero's are not the men and women that serve but the families we leave behind.

I truly believe Pres. Bush knows this. For all the smoke that Kerry blows about being for the American family his wishing to pull the plug on the War on Terrorism makes all the sacrifices service members and their families made for not. Even though its preaching to the choir here if you were thinking that your vote doesn't count or any one you know thinks that their vote wont count to those of us who are laying it on the line so that you have the freedom to vote please do. As for me I endorse George W.

We step into we know not what

We know we have a job to do

With our brothers by our sides

We will be coming home to you

The fear we have, may be strong

But there is a greater fear

That we stand back and do not act

Allow the enemy to get too near

So off we go, into the fight

To bravely do our part

But remember that we are not far

When we are in your heart

Michael

GOD BLESS
Thanks for your service. A Vets Salute to you.

Wow, what a beautiful poem, thank you for posting it.

FWIW, someone posted a thread about Puddle of Mudd playing for the troops in Iraq. PoM is one of my favorite groups--I might be old but I keep up with music :)--and after reading that thread, I kept thinking about the troops whenever I hear "Blurry." (I actually get tears in my eyes now, whenever I hear the song, because there are a few lines that seem so appropriate, so fitting, to the sacrifice they are making).

I think some parts of those lyrics (especially about the "I'll protect you from the unclean" and the "there's ocean in between us, but that's not very far") fit probably the situations of those men and women very well, because they must all be missing someone they love back home, but they are on the front lines, protecting us.

"Everything’s so blurry
And everyone’s so fake
And everybody’s so empty
And everything is so messed up
Pre-occupied without you
I cannot live at all
My whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

You could be my someone
You could be my scene
You know that I’ll protect you
From all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing
Imagine where you are
There’s oceans in between us
But that’s not very far

Can you take it all away
Can you take it all away
When ya shoved it in my face
This pain you gave to me

Can you take it all away
Can you take it all away
When ya shoved it my face

Everyone is changing
There’s no one left that’s real
To make up your own ending
And let me know just how you feel
Cause I am lost without you
I cannot live at all
My whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

You could be my someone
You could be my scene
You know that I will save you
From all of the unclean
I wonder what you're doing
I wonder where you are
There’s oceans in between us
But that’s not very far

...

Nobody told me what you thought
Nobody told me what to say
Everyone showed you where to turn
Told you where to runaway
Nobody told you where to hide
Nobody told you what to say
Everyone showed you where to turn
Showed you where to run away

This pain you gave to me

You take it all
You take it all away...
This pain you gave to me
You take it all away
This pain you gave to me
Take it all away
This pain you gave to me
