Ex-Inmate's Suit Offers View Into Sexual Slavery in Prisons
The New York Times ^ | October 16, 2004 | Adam Liptak

The inmates at the Allred Unit, a tough Texas prison, mostly go by names like Monster, Diablo and Animal. They gave Roderick Johnson, a black gay man with a gentle manner, a different sort of name when he arrived there in September 2000. They called him Coco.

Under the protocols of the prison gangs at Allred, gay prisoners must take women's names. Then they are assigned to one of the gangs.

"The Crips already had a homosexual that was with them," Mr. Johnson explained. "The Gangster Disciples, from what I understand, hadn't had a homosexual under them in a while. So that's why I was automatically, like, given to them."

According to court papers and his own detailed account, the Gangster Disciples and then other gangs treated Mr. Johnson as a sex slave. They bought and sold him, and they rented him out. Some sex acts cost $5, others $10.

>>But for some of the hardcore violent life amounts to rape or be raped, kill or be killed --- both inside and outside a prison. You can't fix that.

Yea, and we should execute them. Even those against the death peanlty have to realize that some people are a threat to prison society and will kill again.

I agree with you --- there are some too dangerous to be around anyone. Execution of the extremely violent would be much better than allowing them to be set free or housing them with anyone else.

Someone stealing a stereo isn't likely to be holding down a job or being responsible to his family any way and most likely they're already living on welfare --- someone like that should be in prison but shouldn't be placed with the extremely violent population.

Coming from someone who has worked on work gangs, ie chain gains with out the chains, yes, chain gangs are great ideas for those who are a low escape risk.

Prisons do segragate based on the severity of the sentence. This usually means segregation based on the severity of the offenders violence.

I don't know that there is an answer. I do know that all those in prison should not be there. I know that Freepers should save their bravatto for those who are guilty not just those who are charged.

When you have those who would condemn O'reilly because the complaint sounds "credible" you cringe to know that these people might be on a jury where they believe that a person is guilty because he is sitting behind the defendant table.

Let's make certain these people are guilty, and then protect them from each other as well as civilized people can so that when they get out they are not bigger monsters than they were when they were put in the system.

I don't know what the beef is with work out rooms, it is good for anyone to burn up energy. Without the weight piles they just work out in their cells.

What you don't understand is the resiliency of the human being. The tighter you lock down a man, the stronger he comes back. You can't break someone by taking things away. He will survive, it is part of our biology. You are silly to believe that making prison horible is in any way a good thing. People thrive when put under pressure, and they come back 10x as bad. Believe it or not, this is true. Ping-pong, weight piles and tv do not make prison enjoyable. Get over it.
