Kerry slams 'refusal to serve'
AP, AFP
04sep04

NEW YORK: Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry declared he had taken enough "incoming" yesterday and blasted back at his Republican antagonists by suggesting George W. Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney were draft dodgers.

In his toughest counter-punch of the campaign, the decorated war hero said he was not going to have his military qualifications questioned by "those who refused to serve" in the Vietnam War.

"For the past week, they attacked my patriotism and my fitness to serve as commander in chief ... well, here's my answer," Senator Kerry said in Ohio.

"I'm not going to have my commitment to defend this country questioned by those who refused to serve when they could have and by those who have misled the nation into Iraq.

"Let me tell you in no uncertain terms what makes someone unfit for office and unfit for duty. Misleading our nation into war in Iraq makes you unfit to lead our country.

"Doing nothing while this nation loses millions of jobs makes you unfit to lead this country. Letting 45 million Americans go without health care for four years makes you unfit to lead this country.

"Letting the Saudi royal family control the price of oil for Americans makes you unfit to lead this country."

Mr Bush spent the Vietnam War in the Texas Air National Guard, and had faced accusations that even then he was absent without leave for long periods. Mr Cheney received five deferments and once explained that he had "other priorities".

Did you also notice that in all these pics with people in the background, they seem to be laughing AT him?

Oh my . . . this is getting to be funny. This is gonna be good. The gop obviously knows that this is a psychological hot-button of Kerry's, they're needling him, and he's taking the bait yet again. You'd think he'd know better, but he can't help himself. Looks like we're gonna go back to this buffonery, fighting Vietnam all over again, and look for Kerry's poll numbers to start dropping.

"He's flipped."

Calling a guy who volunteered for ANG, qualified in an F-102 and stated he was willing to serve in combat, a "draft dodger" is WAY beyond the pale. I hope kerry repeats this charge often in the next two weeks. Voters should know just how crazy this guy is.

If this traitor bastard will again tell around G.W. Bush nor Chenney didn't serve in Vietnam, G.W. should respond, "Sign your 180, stupid! Prove us wrong!"

That does it.

"... they seem to be laughing AT him?"

Laughing at Senator Rice Butt, the Frito Bandaido? Why, I can't imagine why they would want to do that.

Been waiting for this. He's getting scared and taking big chances. I bet their internal polling is looking really really bad.

I guess he's writing off the men who served in the National Guard and Reserves from 1965 through 1972.

Is THAT all he can SAY? He's being whining about his patriotism being challenged for a year now! Really, John F*ckin' seems to forget people are questioning his judgment, not his patriotism. Like his Mary Cheney comments, for which he still hasn't apologized. As for "refusal to serve," its a funny characterization coming from the party that lauded a draft dodger as President. I don't remember Kerry getting tied to be fit over it. He must be getting desperate as the momentum in the polls shifts away from him to have to engage in personal attacks on the President and Vice President.
