Kerry slams 'refusal to serve'
AP, AFP
04sep04

NEW YORK: Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry declared he had taken enough "incoming" yesterday and blasted back at his Republican antagonists by suggesting George W. Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney were draft dodgers.

In his toughest counter-punch of the campaign, the decorated war hero said he was not going to have his military qualifications questioned by "those who refused to serve" in the Vietnam War.

"For the past week, they attacked my patriotism and my fitness to serve as commander in chief ... well, here's my answer," Senator Kerry said in Ohio.

"I'm not going to have my commitment to defend this country questioned by those who refused to serve when they could have and by those who have misled the nation into Iraq.

"Let me tell you in no uncertain terms what makes someone unfit for office and unfit for duty. Misleading our nation into war in Iraq makes you unfit to lead our country.

"Doing nothing while this nation loses millions of jobs makes you unfit to lead this country. Letting 45 million Americans go without health care for four years makes you unfit to lead this country.

"Letting the Saudi royal family control the price of oil for Americans makes you unfit to lead this country."

Mr Bush spent the Vietnam War in the Texas Air National Guard, and had faced accusations that even then he was absent without leave for long periods. Mr Cheney received five deferments and once explained that he had "other priorities".

Thanks. Was in from '68-'72, but wasn't there.

If he won't apologize to former residents of the Hanoi Hilton, he sure won't listen to me.

Can't we also say that John Kerry mislead us into war in Iraq. There are many years worth of quotes coming from him regarding the danger of Saddam?

By his owncriteria..he would in fact be unfit for command.

But wait, we were told during the Klinton administration that there is nothing wrong with being a draft dodger. In fact, liberals supposedly like the guys who ran off to Canada.

"You'd think he'd know better, but he can't help himself."

That and the fact that because he doesn't have any 'brags' to qualify as a statesman, or even a senator, he can only say what he's going to do as president -- not what he's done to qualify for the job. And what he's going to do is all contained in his secret plan portfolio which noboby has seen.

Meanwhile he can only punch out at Bush. He's adept at turning every question he is asked about his 'plans' into a rant about what Bush has done or not done.

What a loser. America cannot afford another pretender.

yes! clinton didn't have ego involved in his lies, they were just a game, that is why he seemed so happy. Kerry has a poorly constructed ego, sense of self, patched together with poses, hobbies and money. No there is there.

Big whoop, he served FOUR (4) months! Wow, some BIG war hero!

And I've had worse wounds happen to me while slipping on ice in my driveway. B-P Cut my hand open on the side of the garage, got infected and wound up in hospital for 5 days.

Ooooooooooo, Kerry refuses to take any more "incoming"!!!
He is so every-inch-the-warrior ,using military metaphors is just SECOND NATURE TO HIM!!! This cheap phony!!! He's hasn't gotten any flak from Bush or Cheney, but he goes right ahead and attacks them as if he has! Welcome once again to the topsy-turvy parallel universe of Leftie Logic.
This is what they plan to do, and are already doing, about the election, BTW. It is going to be a BUMPY ride Nov.2 onwards. I see blood in the streets unless Bush wins by millions of votes.

Indeed. Clinton was happier and more open about his scoundrel nature. After all, he was probably born that way.

Over of Free Dominion, one even said "Kerry has done the impossible," he even makes Clinton look good. B-P

What a great three sentences, cajungirl. Worthy of a willyboyishere in his classic period of the last two years of the Bubba Administration. "a poorly constructed ego, sense of self, patched together with poses, hobbies, and money". PRICELESS~~~~!!!!! I love it~~~(the word "hobbies" adds just the right touch of piquant mediocrity to Kerry)

Campaign now getting very dirty. Kerry will say anything. Bush needs to get just as tough. Bush can not sit back and take shots. He has to go on the offensive hard, attacking Kerry on every issue he can.

One thing everybody needs to be reminded of is that joining the navy was one way to reduce the chances of going to vietnam.

Was it the navy or the navy reserves?

Look here, Kerry was a draft-dodger too. He gamed the system to get into the Navy before the Infantry or the Marine Corps snagged him.

He was much, much safer in the Navy!

Draft dodger vs traitorous Commie.

IMHO serving in the Naitonal Guard does not qualify as draft dodging. Draft dodgers fled to Canada. My husband enlisted in the Navy before he could be drafted, some people might think that is draft dodging. I don't. But, then I don't think service in Viet Nam automatically makes someone a war criminal. The only war criminal I know of is John Fraud Kerry, may he burn in Hell.
