The Guardian ^ | 10-15-04 | Luke Harding

Posted on 10/15/2004 6:30:49 PM PDT by rdl6989

President Muammar Gadafy yesterday embarrassed his latest high-profile western visitor, the German chancellor Gerhard Schröder, by demanding compensation for thousands of landmines left in the Libyan desert during the second world war. During talks in Tripoli, Mr Gadafy complained that dozens of Libyans were still being injured and killed by the anti-tank mines, which were buried by Erwin Rommel and his retreating army more than 60 years ago.

You know, just because Qaddafi is our friend now doesn't mean that he's no longer a tin horn dictator and a lunatic. Oh well, I guess the Germans think that those lucrative oil contracts are worth the embarrassment.

I donno. Make the Krauts pay. They deserve to be embarrassed, even by somebody like Kadaffy.

Yep, I agree. This tinhorn is at least some of the time on our side again. The German's seemingly never are on our side yet again my I remind you. The Germans are rich, they can and should pay for what they did to poor Lybia!

...and a lunatic.

Yesterday, however, German officials confirmed that the notoriously unpredictable Libyan leader had suggested over an impromptu three-hour banquet that Germany should pay compensation. Libyans were still dying from mines left by the Germany army, he said.

I think Kadaffi has lost whatever mind he had.

Something perversely humorous about this.

Seems reasonable to me. The Germans ought to pay to clean up the mess they left.

And while you're at it, Daffy, how are you going to pay back 259 lives (plus 11 on the ground from Pan Am 103?? Blood money does not cut it for me. One a terrorist, always a terrorist. Rot in hell.

Agreed. I am sickened by the thought of Schroeder and Kadaffy doing business. I guess Osama, Jaques, Yasser, Fidel, Kim mentally Il and the others didn't make it to the party.

Germany's Fair Game on this. At the least they could send some soldiers with whatever technology necessary to dig up or deactivate those mines.

The Germans don't seem to have gotten passed the Hitler regime. Why not make them continue to pay for it.

If they supported Saddam they have not changed.

I do not understand. The Germans laid down millons of mines throughout "Fortress Europe" during WW2. On D-Day, our troops landed on one of the most fortified and booby-trapped coastlines in the history of warfare.

Yet within a few years, almost all of it was cleared up and life got back to normal.

Why could not the Libyans do the same? Why have the Libyans been sitting around for the past 60+ year waiting for somebody else to come clean up their mess for them? Why Libya? What is so special about Libya?

Agree Sam

While I may get satisfaction in watching Schroeder and 'Daffy air some of their dirty laundry in public, I would not lift a finger to support a terrorist mass murderer like 'Daffy. The article states allied forces laid mines there too... is he to hold them accountable next? Let him rot in hell.

I dunno. Maybe Gadafy should have considered buying technology for landmine removal rather nuclear technology.
