Activist accuses GOP of 'attacking gays'
CNN ^ | Oct. 15, 2004

Posted on 10/15/2004 1:41:21 PM PDT by Unam Sanctam

The head of the nation's largest gay and lesbian Republican group slammed fellow Republicans Friday for "feigning outrage" over comments by Sen. John Kerry, and called on President Bush to "stop attacking gay families on the campaign trail."

Patrick Guerriero, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, said Democratic presidential nominee Kerry was "not wise" to refer to the daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney during the answer to a question about homosexuality during a presidential debate Wednesday night. (Special Report: America Votes 2004, the debates)

But he said Republicans "who are expressing outrage at the debate comments really have been outrageous themselves."

"The reality is the type of outrage that is being expressed by some Republicans should be expressed at themselves. They've decided to use gay families as wedge issues across America in swing states -- that is truly outrageous," he told CNN's "American Morning."

The comments come as Republicans continue to criticize Kerry over the mention, and Democrats accuse the Bush-Cheney ticket of trying to create an uproar in order to avoid talking about major issues and Kerry's success in the debate.

A CNN/USA Today/ Gallup poll taken immediately after the debate found Kerry the winner by a wide margin. (CNN Poll: Early survey gives Kerry the edge)

Democrats also say the vice president has brought up the sexuality of his daughter and campaign manager Mary Cheney on the campaign trail.

Yet more proof that the Log Cabin Republicans are not true Republicans, but simply call themselves such in order to foist the gay activist agenda on the Republican party. The Democrats try to use for their own political ends the family member of an opposing candidate who to her credit has not made her sexual proclivities a political issue, and the Log Cabin Republicans blame the Republicans???? And as for the charge that the Republicans are using gay issues as "wedge issues", what a ridiculous charge. Maybe, just maybe, with activist judges imposing same sex marriage right and left, people might have a principled stand for the protection of traditional marriage -- would it be too difficult to grant that people might have good faith disagreement on the issue. Moreover, people in this country have a right to believe that homosexual activity is sinful. The government has no right to impose liberal morality on society. Finally, gay activists in Canada and Sweden have with their hate speech crime legislation pretty much succeeded in banning at least parts of the Bible, so the charge that gay activists and their Democratic supporters would do that here is not in the least farfetched.

"called on President Bush to "stop attacking gay families on the campaign trail."

Sounds like this guy got the DNC Handbook and is launching a 'pre-emptive strike.'

You have got to be kidding me. So exactly how does one's ideology overcome one's principles?

These Log Cabinites disgust me. They should be given no political clout what so ever and should be ingnored.

Why did I read "wedge issues" as "wedgies"?

heinous impostors all. Liberal activists, disguised as Repubs to promote an agenda, yes, but Republicans - I don't think so. Sham.

When the Cheney family was asked about this issue they openly said yes, she is gay, so why does that give kerry the right to use that as a political dirty trick in a vain attempt to stir up the Christian right to turn voters against Bush/Cheney? I have news for the kerry camp, we are not affected except to see just how low you will sink to be president. That was just as low as the edwards - Christopher Reeves will walk line......Both are scumbags, to quote teresa.

If the log cabin republicans want to raise a legitimate issue they should ask kerry why did he do it.

...called on President Bush to "stop attacking gay families on the campaign trail."

Isn't this breathtaking? And the media will run with this as if truth. I can hear the radio news spot now:

"Does President Bush attack gay families while on the campaign trail? One leading Republican activist claims just that..."

Honestly, you just want to vomit.

The judges are the ones giving us a mega-wedgie. It certainly isn't Bush's fault.

People should stay out of the Cheneys family life. It was completely out of bounds for a presidential candidate to attack the daughter of his opponent regardless of the reason. One does not criticize others children.
The Log Cabin Republicans should stay out of this since it is a personal, family issue. They are jumping in the fray to advance their agenda and they should STFU.
If they really wanted to respect other gays, they could say they thought that Kerry's use of Mary Cheney was disrespectful. That would earn them some respect since we already know they are against the marriage amendment.

I think it is about time that judges were all elected, not appointed, so that when they get out of line and start making their own rules and laws, WE THE PEOPLE can FIRE them!!!

All the wackos are coming out of the closet to attack our President as the 2004 campaign hits the home stretch. The shrillness of it all is amusing. There sure are some desperate, dysfunctional creatures on the Left.

Bush is the first Republican President to give the Logs the time of day, and this is the thanks he gets. In retrospect, it was a mistake for him to meet with them at all. But who knew back then?
