Why this election is unique

Contemporary observers invariably describe every presidential election as “the most important ever.” In fact, a daily publication put out by New York magazine during the Republican National Convention quoted political experts as far back as the 1920s proclaiming just that.

Nevertheless, there is good reason why such a claim can be made for this year’s race for the White House. This will be the 10th presidential election I have covered or been involved in, and here’s why it’s shaping up as a turning point in American history:

• It will be the first presidential election since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which changed the way we look at the rest of the world, and the way the rest of the world looks at us. I can’t think of any segment of our society — politics, government, the economy, transportation, social policy, the way we go about our daily lives — that hasn’t been affected by what happened that terrible day.
