Surge of Urban Registrations Could Lift Kerry in Ohio BY JULIE CARR SMYTH And DIANE SOLOV c.2004 Newhouse News Service
CLEVELAND -- Signs of a heavy surge of new urban voters in Ohio could add up to immense influence for Democratic-leaning central cities in this key swing state.
At last count, more than half of the new voters registered in Ohio -- 475,000 out of 830,000 -- hail from eight urban counties: Cuyahoga (Cleveland), Franklin (Columbus), Hamilton (Cincinnati), Montgomery (Dayton), Summit (Akron), Lucas (Toledo), Lorain (Lorain/Elyria) and Stark (Canton/Massillon). They make up nearly 6 percent of the entire 7.8 million-plus statewide electorate, at a time when the latest polls show President Bush and Sen. John Kerry running neck and neck in the state.

Ohio may already be lost to the LLL.
This is really a very clever strategy by the dems. they want the uproar of a contested election, so they are seeding the news market AND taking actions to make certain there is reasonable doubt about the veracity of the vote.
Win or lose - they get what they want.
B@stards ;-)

oops - sry for dupe.
Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake but doesn't this mean that half of the new voter registrations are in non-urban, conservative leaning counties?
Why yes, yes it does. Don't panic guys. I live in OH, the GOP GOTV effort has been huge.
Also one of the urban counties mentioned, Hamilton, voted 54% for Bush in 2000.
Many media reports assert that Democrats have bested Republicans in registering new voters this year, is that so?
"No. In state after state after state, Democrats are registering voters to make up for population losses, especially in cities, and they're registering people who are not eligible to vote."
Will those people wind up voting nonetheless?
"We'll see."
Mehlman uses the crucial battleground state of Ohio as an example of what he claims is the Republicans' advantage in registrations. Voters don't register by party in Ohio, but based on registration numbers in counties identified as largely Republican or mainly Democratic based on how those counties voted in past presidential elections, Mehlman explains that Republicans have netted 100,000 new registrations over their numbers in 2000. He points out that many Democratic registrations are replacing their voters who have left the rolls."We're adding, they're substituting," Mehlman concludes.
I am concerned. However, we have a GREAT Secretary of State who is onto the problem, big time.
Yeah, if what they want is to live in a banana republic.
Cincy proper is liberal like any city. After all, they elected Jerry Springer. However, Hamilton County as a whole is one of the more conservative large urban areas in the Midwest.
agreed, I'd like to see some figures by precinct but I don't think they're available.
Will Kookcinich lose?
STOP VOTING FRAUD - Put indelible ink on the thumb of each person that votes!
Make sure you also read my other freepost regarding Northern Ohio US Judge Carr opening up the election for voters anywhere in their County.....I'm not as confident that "the machine" can be stopped.
Somebody with a camcorder needs to follow around some of these buses to document the crass scandle.
Or at least to see if it picks up the dead!
I firmly feel that W. will win Ohio. The gay-marriage amendment on the ballot will energize conservative voters who did not vote last time. Plus, Tony's on the case. ;)

Hamilton County currently reporting 570k registered voters. In the year 2000 they had 585k voters. I Know they've lost population and if they don't get another 15000 registered voters processed hamilton will actually go down in registrations overall.
Some serious smoke blowing is going on here methinks.
Yeah I saw that story but not your post, Blackwell is appealing. That's a US district judge interfering in state elections. It oughta get slapped down but who knows?
Ohio should publicize the fact that fraud is a FELONY!
"Some serious smoke blowing is going on here methinks."
First sign that we've hit a "sensitive topic" are attempts to blow it off.
Challenge all Ohio Freepers to follow the urban "Demovans" from voting place to voting place with their digital cameras. It happens & it happens often, just wait.
I've got yer back, man. :)
