Kerry Rep on Today Show: Lesbian Line "Not his Best Moment, Awkward, a Distraction"
The Today Show | governsleast governsbest

Posted on 10/15/2004 4:29:22 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

You'd normally think that The Today Show would have buried Kerry's lesbian debate jab in the same deep-sixed vault reserved for Swift Boat allegations, Kerry campaign's threats to Sinclair broadcasting and the mystery surrounding Kerry's military discharge.

But, surprise! Calling it the issue of "the L-word," the controvery led Today this morning. The opening credit showed Kerry, sotto voce, making his statement during the debate, and after a brief news summary that mentioned the matter, it was on to Katie's interview of Mary Matalin and Kerry rep and former Clinton press sec Dee Dee Myers.

As an aside, Katie's megalomania reached new sartorial heights this morning, as she sported a blouse/sweater with a huge, glitzy K splashed across it. What's next: bring on the bling-bling?

In any case, Couric first questioned Matalin, and the basic theme was "what was wrong with raising Mary Cheney's lesbianism given that Dick Cheney has mentioned it and it is not a secret?" Frankly I didn't think Matalin marshalled the best arguments, but did make the case that Mary Cheney has not been a public figure and that Kerry's statement was outrageous and over-the-line.

Turning to Myers, Katie made a surprisingly pointed remark: "some have said that Kerry's statement was not a magnanimous gesture but a calculated political move intended to undermine Pres. Bush's culturally conservative base."

Forced into a corner, Myers admitted: "frankly, I don't think this was Kerry's best moment. It was awkward, and has been a distraction from the campaign's ability to talk about the real issues."

Dee Dee then launched into a laundry list of Kerry campaign talking points on issues foreign and domestic, and claimed the Bush campaign is seeking to exploit the L-word issue to distract from the fact that W lost the debates.

But clearly Kerry is feeling the heat. A candidate knows he's in trouble when even his own spokesman rips him, even if done with velvety gloves.

Almost every commercial these days and a lot of sitcoms etc, portray men as imbeciles.

That is SO true.

PS: Have you gone Hawaiian yet?

Gosh, I hope so! I'll have to admit I am worried.

Maybe I'm not giving the American people enough credit to see through such a total loser (Kerry) - but the polls are all SO CLOSE. I don't understand it at all.

Then the voter fraud that I know will be rampant for the Dems and the fact that the Dems intend on contesting anything and everything the night of the election.. I feel like I am living in bizarro world.

Wow, are you serious? She was actually wearing this today?

Thanks again for another excellent Today Show report!

This "lesbian" comment hurt Kerry bigtime. I was at Blackvoices (An African-American website) and there was a poll and 50% didn't approve of what Kerry did. That is a watershed, because they normally think that GWB is the devil and Kerry "walks on water".

I know, it's almost hard to believe, but yes, she was wearing the glitzy K. There're a few minutes left of the show - perhaps you could still catch her.

Thanks for your kind words about the threads. It let's me feel I'm playing some part in getting W over the finish line!

I noticed it myself - how could you not? The brooch was huge, gaudy and tacky. It looked like stuff I see the teenagers at the rink wear.

Wow! That is some interesting, very important information. Thanks for passing along. As you know, Kerry has already been having problems motivating black voters, and if this blunder costs him even a few percent of the black vote, it could be crucial in states like FL, OH and PA.

I just remembered the Today Show is on until 10am (not 9am like Fox & Friends). Just checked out the show for myself and saw Katie with her glitzy "K" sweater. I assume it's for "Katie"... or is it? ;-)

Is that K for Katie, or K as in Martha Stewart's associate K-Mart? Is that K for the Kryptonite that is so deadly to Superman?

Sorry if this is tastless, but it reminds me of the big letter "A" that plays such a big role in "The Scarlet Letter." Enough said.

As you've probably noticed on the thread, some have speculated it's for Kerry, while one wag surmised it stands for Kool-Aid!

Kerry's stunt was not just aimed at creating a wedge between Bush and his base. It was also designed to shore up Reagan Democrats from crossing over to the GOP.

A vile, crass, rancid move from a vampire.

Which is exactly why they're repeating it on the "Today" show -- they want to make sure any stay-at-home moms who might have missed the debate know about Mary Cheney.

I did not know those initial sweaters were back in style again.

It's not just initial sweaters - it's initials on everything. Jewelrey, purses, socks, you name it. I do not live in the fashion center of the universe but this trend started last year. I had thought it had burned itself out already. But apparently I was wrong since K-K-Katie was wearing that pin.

"I have no doubt that some gays are born that way, or at the very least, become gay through factors in early childhood that are entirely outside their control." Allow me to point out that science has identified an infinitesimally small percentage of human beings for whom chromosomal anomaly causes gender confusion. This is to say that a very tiny percentage of homosexual phenomena has a real chemical/genetic origin. But this is a far smaller percentage than the current gross phenomenon we see 'outing' itself in the masquerade of 'gay pride'. Most homosexuality is lack of sexual self-control, indulging the sex drive instead of mastering it. [Incidentally, the word 'gay' has taken on a meaning akin to 'self absorbed sexual deviant seeking public affirmation' in my writing lexicon. Sad really; the word once meant happy and carefree.]
