Anything to get elected
townhall.com ^ | 10/15/04 | Charles Krauthammer

WASHINGTON -- After the second presidential debate, in which John Kerry used the word ``plan" 24 times, I said on television that Kerry has a plan for everything except curing psoriasis. I should have known there is no parodying Kerry's pandering. It turned out days later that the Kerry campaign has a plan -- nay, a promise -- to cure paralysis. What is the plan? Vote for Kerry.

I'm not making this up. I couldn't. This is John Edwards on Monday at a rally in Newton, Iowa: ``If we do the work that we can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to walk, get up out of that wheelchair and walk again.''

In my 25 years in Washington, I have never seen a more loathsome display of demagoguery. Hope is good. False hope is bad. Deliberately raising for personal gain false hope in the catastrophically afflicted is despicable.

Where does one begin to deconstruct this outrage?

First, the inability of the human spinal cord to regenerate is one of the great mysteries of biology. The answer is not remotely around the corner. It could take a generation to unravel. To imply, as Edwards did, that it is imminent if only you elect the right politicians is scandalous.

If John Kerry does not cure all these things, do you think John Edwards will sue him for malpractice?

This time the Democrats have gone way over the line. The lie about a million black voters disenfranchised, CBS with their fake forgeries, ABC Mark Halperin's signed cofession of Kerry bias, the book banning attempt against Unfit For Command and The New Soldier, The DNC 66 page Memo reported on Drudge "if you can't find any suppression, the be preemptive", the rhetoric of Gore, Kennedy, Albright, Dean saying the terror alerts are political, the ballot box stuffing in Franklin County, OH and Delaware County OH and in Milwaukee, Wisconson and on and on....now Kerry has the nerve to attack the Vice President's daughter?W is playing by the rules as far as I'm aware. It's a stacked deck and yet, somehow, I believe that W is the man for the job and all the devil's minions will fail.

Anything to get elected?

And she looked at me from her hospital bed and she just looked at me and she said, "Remember: integrity, integrity, integrity." Those are the three words that she left me with.

Honestly, I don't buy this bs. Why would his mother have to try to teach him about integrity at such an age? Seems like he would know at such an age.

As a doctor by training, I've known better than to believe the hype -- and have tried in my own counseling of the newly spinal-cord injured to place the possibility of cure in abeyance. I advise instead to concentrate on making a life (and a very good life it can be) with the hand one is dealt. The greatest enemy of this advice has been the snake-oil salesmen promising a miracle around the corner. I never expected a candidate for vice president to be one of them.

Charles Krauthammer nails this.

Kedwards elixir - the cure for Alzheimer's, paralysis, and baldness. Get a free bottle with every vote.

And therein lies the reason why, if Kerry would ever be elected, millions of Americans will be gone - POOF - in an instant.

How about his filthy, lying, shameless exploitation of Christopher Reeves, claiming that the comatose man called him to thank him and support him. Sheesh! What a stupid F'ing ghoul!

Not really, Edwards channeled Reeves for Kerry. It's true, he's done it before.

It may have been possible that Christopher Reeve could have regained considerably more volitional movement over the next five years - we shall never know. But any improvement would have been entirely independent of WHO shall be elected on November 2, 2004.

For many applications, stem cell research may eventually prove to be about as useful as magnet therapy. These highly specialized therapies may have a relatively good success rate in certain limited applications, but they are not universal cures or panaceas.

If you read only one thread today, this should be it. One of the most poignant and well-reasoned articles I've ever seen from Krauthammer.

Politicians have long promised a chicken in every pot. It is part of the game. It is one thing to promise ethanol subsidies here, dairy price controls there. But to exploit the desperate hopes of desperate people with the promise of Christ-like cures is beyond the pale.

So true. These guys have no more conscience than huckster televangelists who prey on impoverished and good-hearted but naive old ladies, smooth talking them into drawing their last $1000 out of savings while they're building mansions in Florida.

Dr. Krauthammer is one of my favorite analysts.

He is brilliant and always a good read.

In another posting I wrote that Krauthammer's paralysis was a disease or condition. Well, according to Dennis Praeger it was caused by a swimming (read diving) accident. Just wanted to correct the record.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research has nothing to do with curing disease and has everything to do with the politics of abortion. The pro-abortion crowd was tired of getting trounced on Partial Birth Abortion, which happens on the extreme end of pregnancy, so they decided to exploit the issue of the use of embryonic cells in research, which happens on the other extreme end.

However, to do so, they had to introduce two factors. The first is the promise of cure if the research is carried out. This is, of course, a fantasy. But in order to score points in this debate, they have to pretend that it is true. There are more than enough true believers in the abortion wars to make this a viable possibility.

The second factor that had to be introduced is the as yet unthinkable argument of the utility of life. Previous fights over abortion have centered on the rights of the woman and privacy. These are well worn battles that I will not re-hash here. But the argument if favor of Embryonic Stem Cell Research relies on the proposition that the value of the research outweighs the value of the life taken.

Unfortunately, once we start down this road, it is rather hard to stop. You already see, in the Netherlands and elsewhere, doctors making decisions about the quality of a life of a handicapped person, and balancing that value against the cost of medical care. More and more doctors are quite frank about murdering patients who have a marginal quality of life, with or without their consent.

Frankly, this sort of argument should scare wheelchair bound people and families of Alzeimer's patients to death. The very argument being advanced to offer them false hope now will, in a few years time, be used to destroy that hope, and the life that goes with it.

Only if you didn't know how to make magnets that last long enough to use. ADULT stem cells are usefull at this time. EMBRYONIC stem cells can't even be grown and differentiated yet. The idea that embryonic stem cells is a panacea is purely theoretical - based merely on the general idea that they haven't formed into anything yet.

Maybe little Johnny Edwards will sue Heinz for causing him to choke on ketchup or something...
