The two NJ incidents were fully explained, Gas leak in house, welding tank leak in car.

Hey! I never put my tin foil hat away! :-)
Even without my tinfoil hat, I can't keep from suspecting something is being covered up if that kind of "explanation" is being handed out. Gasoline, natural gas in building systems and acetylene all have very noticeable and distinctive odors. Odors that constitute a clear warning to get out.
