Married Up; Kerrys Blundering Reagan Rip-off

“Married Up” – Kerry’s Blundering Reagan Rip-off

As we all know, President Reagan passed away this summer. In the multitude of heartfelt remembrances and eulogies, Brian Mulroney, former Primer Minister of Canada, related this story:

President Reagan had spoken to Parliament, handled complex files with skill and good humor -- strongly impressing his Canadian hosts -- and here we were, waiting for our wives.

When their car drove in a moment later, out stepped Nancy and Mila -- looking like a million bucks. As they headed towards us, President Reagan beamed, threw his arm around my shoulder and said with a grin: "You know, Brian, for two Irishmen we sure married up."

In that visit -- in that moment -- one saw the quintessential Ronald Reagan -- the leader we respected, the neighbor we admired and the friend we loved -- a president of the United States of America whose truly remarkable life we celebrate in this magnificent cathedral today.

In yesterday’s debate John Kerry rather shamelessly appropriated Reagan’s line about marrying up. Here’s what Kerry said:

Well, I guess the president and you and I are three examples of lucky people who married up.

And some would say maybe me moreso than others.

But I can take it.

Reagan’s joke was self deprecating and good natured and even played in to the American dream of the underdog being the winner. The class and beauty of their wives formed the basis of the gag. Class and beauty is what they “married up” to.

Kerry, on the other hand, transformed “marrying up” in to marrying wealth. His crass “me moreso than others” took the class and beauty out of it and made him come off as the smarmy gigolo he is.

He tried to rip-off Reagan but couldn’t even do that right because Kerry just doesn’t get it.

I think this "'mother' of all gaffes" is being underestimated in its importance. We'll see.

Worth repeating. I missed the nuance first time around. Bump!

I couldn't believe this comment and then the big smile from Kerry!

He never said one word about his love for his wife or any of his children. How he got from the question to his dying Mother was stunning. I guess he was looking for the sympathy vote.

After this personal profile of Kerry, coupled with his personal attack on the Cheney family and Mary Cheney, I can't possibly see how he could win the vote of women, straight or gay. He said the word "lesbian" like it was a four-letter word!

Shame on Senator Kerry. The only interest he represents are Self-Interest.

I'd be fuming if I were Tereza. She's not my favorite persona, but when your husband starts talking about his Mother when asked about his wife, get me to a good divorce lawyer or at least Lorraine Babbit!

Oh, now there's something to recommend a presidential candidate. His sugar mama made him sigh a pre-nup.

Question for Terayzah: If you don't trust Johnny Gigolo, sweetie, why in Hades should we?!?

>>>> Yeah, but Bush didn't dump a first wife so he could marry a stinkin' rich widow.

Well, to be fair, neither did Kerry.

>>>> The man is a social climbing TOTAL snob, and while Boston College is a perfectly good school, Kerry's choice would have been either Harvard or Yale Law School, so, were his grades that bad?

Let's not get into grades, now. My understanding is that if you have political aspirations up in the Boston area, BC is the place to go. Connections, connections, connections.

The way it is done in France is that a man of power marries a woman of means. That is acceptable, the reverse is not.

On CNN, Greenfield and Aaron Brown were all gushy about that moment, saying it was a "good sign" that Kerry could be humorous about his marriage. They just loved the whole debate from Kerry's side anyway. All smiles at CNN, and giving the debate, again, to Kerry.

Kerry though has one skill...debating. He is better than Gore at it and better than Pres. Bush. If people vote for a good debater, then he's their man. Honesty, facts, sincerity, etc, all seem irrelevant to those who flaunt a debating skill!

A tacky joke! Someone should publish a book of his tacky jokes. It can include his, "By the looking around, I can see that there are only three of us affected by my tax hike. Moderator, Bush and Kerry. Then, of course, there is this mother of all gaffes! When ever Kerry tries to be funny he just comes across as an arrogant SOB.
