---My understanding is that NY doesn't call it's regular court district but supreme, If you ever watch Law & Order you'll notice they always call their courts supreme

You're right. The trial level courts in NY state are called "Supreme Courts." The highest, or "supreme," court in NY is called the "Court of Appeals"

In NY, the Supreme Court is know as the court of unlimited original jurisdiction, which means that any kind of case may be brought before it.
