These are views of the lava lake on Mt. Erebus volcano, Antarctica. It is hard to imagine such intense heat on such a frigid continent as Antarctica.

Cool pic of Mt. Erebus

I was under the (mistaken) impression that the Antarctic plate was geologically very boring.
