From that distance, a chopper would be about two pixels wide. The lava dome in the middle of the crater is about 1/3 of a mile across.

Lets hope if she goes, she does it in the next day or two, it's supposed to cloud up again soon.

She won't go. She's just building a new dome. It's not a mountain; it's a big earth zit.

What's coming now is the 'plug'. It's molten, but very thick. They said early on it might be basically plugged for a half mile or so.

So when all this relatively low temp stuff works it's way out, and fresh lava gets here, we could have steam and ash explosions. The fresher the lava, the more compressed disolved gas it has in it.

So it wont do another 1980, but it could be a pretty big event anyways.

I'm in The Dalles (about 50 miles away) and today I can see a wispy trail of brown ash and/or smoke from Mt St Helens.

I am and I just did! Fire on the Mountain!

Beautiful evening here tonight, almost full moon, and absolutely clear.

Bit chilly though, about 34. Everytime I let the mutt in, he just shivers alot, then decides it's too warm inside, so he heads for the back door.

St. Helens - incredible new pictures.

They announced an effort to name the new glacier. A temporary name at best, it ain't gonna last long.

Three images of the dome taken with FLIR (Forward looking infrared)

When they showed the video of this sequence last night, you can actually see an alluvial fan shaped lave flow off the the west of the pictures here, but they didn't show that part this morning.

Judging by the forecast, after a few hours, the best view won't happen till about Wednesday.
