Caustic liquid spills from tank near Arthur Kill

CARTERET, N.J. (AP) Thousands of gallons of a caustic liquid spilled Saturday when a tank collapsed at a terminal along a busy shipping lane, authorities said.
Three people were taken to a hospital with mild burns, and some of the liquid reached the Arthur Kill, a waterway between Carteret and Staten Island, N.Y., said Petty Officer 2nd Class Mike Hvozda, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard.
The liquid was identified as sodium hydroxide, a corrosive chemical used in detergent, and equal amount of water, he said.
Two Coast Guard vessels were dispatched to keep other boats away as a precaution, he said......
