The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Ramadan terror concerns?
Full Story

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

Muslim Charity List Request Denied

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ Oct. 18, 2004 — Justice Department officials rejected a request by Muslim groups who wanted a list of preapproved Islamic charities. Muslims are required during the month of Ramandan to make contributions. But some are worried their donations could lead them to be suspected of helping fund terrorism.

A coalition of Muslim groups held a news conference outside the federal building in Newark today.

Justice Department spokesman Bryan Sierra says the department is not in a position to put out lists, particularly of any organizations that are good or bad.

Since December 2001, four major Islamic charities in the U-S with suspected ties to terrorists have been raided or shut down.

Not terror related but too weird to pass up.

TV Calls Air Force for Help

CORVALLIS, OR-October 18, 2004 — It's the case of the TV that was calling for help.

An Air Force search and rescue alert was trigged by Chris van Rossman's flatscreen Toshiba TV. It has a built-in VCR, DVD and CD player. And an undocumented feature that has authorities scratching their heads.

Some sort of electric glitch was causing van Rossman's TV to transmit on the international distress frequency. The signal was picked up by a satellite and relayed to the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center in Virginia.

Van Rossman had no idea until airmen, deputies and Corvallis, Oregon, police were knocking on the door of his apartment. The errant signal was traced to his TV set.

Van Rossman was warned to keep the TV off or face a $10,000 fine for sending a false distress signal.

A spokeswoman for Toshiba says they've never heard of this sort of problem before. But the company is promising to give van Rossman a new TV.

Peace Brother. I thought something was a miss. We got a great group here at TM. Let's foil some AQ plots and while we are at it, let's make sure we are all doing as much as possible to get our GREAT PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH re-elected! 4 more years BABY!

I took my yard sign to main street in my town in NJ and held it up proudly over my head at an intersection (on the corner of course). The response was tremendous, people were honking and cheering us on like crazy, thumbs up, "where can I get some signs?" questoins. The support was huge.

Also, thank you again Rushmore Rocks for the coolness in stepping in like that.

subsea06, scribed to memory, I look forward to seeing your posts around FR and TM.

Take care all.

I certainly don't know Arabic, but I would venture to guess that what they're referring to here in such lines as:

A program that relieved to the purpose the way ring to 11 September and

A program relieved to the purpose the way episode to 11 September

is that they have a program that's the SEQUEL to September 11.

I've waited to post this until I got the go ahead from a friend who is a highway patrolman here in Rapid City. It is annecdotal and no, there is no link.

10 days ago, the patrolman, stopped a car for speeding on Interstate 90, near Ellsworth Air Force Base. In the car were five middle-easterners, four men and one woman. They had no luggage. According to their story they were travelling from Seattle to Chicago. Patrolman contacted authorities and gave their I.D.'s. There was a "hit" on three of the five. They were on the F.B.I "terror watch list".

Patrolman was advised to issue just a warning and let them go. (At this point of his story I was a bit appalled!)

However, F.B.I. agents started following them about 150 miles east of here. Rather than arrest them locally, they wanted to see where they would go and who they could lead them to. Still don't know the outcome, and probably never will, but I thought it was a bit interesting.

Point is.....this stuff is happening everywhere, not just in the big cities. And the F.B.I. is acting. We just don't always know about it.

I wanted to tell you guys about this sooner, but was advised to hold off until way after they reached their destination.

My friend is a 20 year veteran of the SDHP, former military, and I trust him not to "BS" me.

Interesting RR. Thanks for posting. I agree with you that it is not just the big cities. I'm sure there is much more going on that we will never hear about.

G'nite all. Back on the Thune campaign trail early in the morning. Lots of doors to knock on....and when I get to the "rez", lots of tent flaps.

Sorry, that wasn't very P.C. of me. Actually, we have some really progressive and wonderful Native Americans here wanting to make positive contributions to the political scene. I have great respect for most of them, and I call many of them "Friend".

My feelings about the "reservation system" is for another thread and another time.

PART 1
Southeast Asia's modern-day pirates
By Eric Koo

The unipolarity of the United States and its near domination of the world's oceans by its naval fleets ensure that no other nation could build a navy with enough strength to rival the US in the near future. Washington's unchallenged dominance is an obvious strategy in view of the strategic situation that currently favors the US.

Since the Korean War, the US Navy has been reduced to what are in essence support and transportation roles for US ground and air forces fighting their conflicts on land. The recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have further increased these protectionary maritime roles along sea routes that deliver oil to the United States and its allies. The use of the navy in opposing other potential enemy naval fleets is almost moot. The last major naval engagement was a short, one-sided operation between the US fleet and Iraqi naval assets in the 1991 Gulf War. Thereafter, the US Navy largely played a deterrent role, as seen in the Taiwan crisis in 1996 when China fired missiles in the waters around Taiwan. This was reaffirmed once again by US Admiral Thomas Fargo in a message to Beijing, stating that US naval forces would be used in defense of Taiwan should war break out over the Taiwan Strait.

Thus the world's strategic naval situation is one of uneasy balance and inactivity. Naval forces will not likely have opportunities to pit their firepower against each other in the future. But navies will need to remain strong as another threat requiring the use of naval power now lurks in the shadows.

September 11, 2001, highlighted terrorism as a new worldwide security threat, and modern terrorist groups have already demonstrated a capacity for creative horizontal escalation, with possible development toward terrorist operations at sea.

Do You Yahoo? Al-Qaeda Does (and now so does Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's Tawhid wal- Jihad group!")

Knowing that the Internet giant Yahoo is a leading purveyor of Internet terror, a friend suggested it's time to launch a campaign against the company.

A friend suggested the phrase, "Do You Yahoo? Al-Qaeda Does (and now so does Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's Tawhid wal- Jihad group!")  His suggestion came as a result of Yahoo's long time hosting of a  group called  "Global Islamic Media" (GIM), which under a series of different names has been a  reported mouthpiece for al Qaeda.

A Graphic of Osama bin Laden on GIM

As you may be aware, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's Tawhid wal- Jihad group declared allegiance to the al-Qaeda terrorist network led by Osama bin Laden, according to a statement posted on a radical Islamic Web site.

"We announce that Tawhid wal-Jihad, its emir and its soldiers have pledged allegiance to the sheikh of the mujahedeen, Osama bin Laden," Bloomberg media reported the group said. The statement couldn't be independently verified. "Osama bin Laden is the best leader for Islam's armies against the infidels and the apostates."

A montage of pictures of Zarqawi, his group's distinctive logo (and also presumably the statement of allegiance) were also posted on Yahoo's GIM, which now goes under the name of Markazilamislami. An apparent Yahoo group mirror site, jabha, also carried similar images.

Global Islamic Media (GIM) has been widely regarded as being a mouthpiece for al Qaeda and at one point it had more than six thousand members. Now with a new on line name it has 130 members and its mirror site has 72.

GIM achieved recent notoriety in part because in Dec. 2003, Islamic militants discussed the possibility of a terrorist attack designed to affect the Spanish general election.

In a March 2004 Agence France Press (AFP) story, the news agency reported that Britain's Channel 4 News revealed that a Dec. 10 posting on GIM, which had previously carried statements purporting to be from Al-Qaeda affiliates, suggested that attacks could help bring about a Socialist election victory and the withdrawal of Spain's troops from Iraq.

According to Channel 4 News, the GIM posting was issued under the name of the Centre for Services to the Mujahideen and read, "The approaching general elections in Spain in March next year must be exploited to the extreme. We think that the Spanish government will not stand more than two blows, or three at the most, before it will be forced to withdraw (from Iraq) because of the public pressure on it. If its forces remain after these blows, the victory of the Socialist party will be almost guaranteed, and the withdrawal of Spanish forces will be on its campaign manifesto."

After the bombings, which killed 200 people and injured 1,500, Spain's conservative party was defeated. Spain's new Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero who criticized President George W. Bush for the Iraq campaign, has withdrawn Spanish

GIM's al Qaeda connection is routinely accepted by many analysts. Paul Eedle, a British investigative reporter who specializes in radical Islam, was interviewed by CNN in March. He commented, "The Global Islamic Media list .... puts out a stream of statements, 30 to 50 a month, explaining the group's strategy and claiming responsibility for its actions, including the Madrid (train) bombings ... "

According to Eedle, the Internet has been a wonderful creation for al Qaeda. "The Net creates a virtual meeting place, a glue that holds together al Qaeda, even though its leadership has been holed up in the mountains and is now surrounded."

So if you Yahoo! remember that so do al Qaeda and al-Zarqawi.  And they're really rather dangerous company to be around!

While I didn't contact Yahoo for this article, I did earlier this year for another story about GIM. Yahoo routinely refuses to respond to requests for information as to why it hosts GIM and other similar radical Islamic hate groups, issuing only this statement to me a few months ago.

It came from Mary Osako, Mary Osako, Yahoo's Director of Communication. She said that those wishing to use Yahoo Groups "agree to not use the Service to upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory   ...  hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable. When notified of content that may be in violation of our Terms of Service, we are committed to reviewing each report and taking appropriate action, generally within 24 hours."

Interestingly, a series of rotating advertisements for American companies can also be found on many of the posts of GIM and other Islamic hate groups. Understandably, officials I talked to earlier this year were less than thrilled about their company's unintended involvement.

However, be aware that if you fight Yahoo, they play dirty. When my investigative efforts were  covered by CNN (http://joyjunction.org/video3.htm), while GIM went off  line for a while before reemerging with one of those slightly different names referred to above, MY Yahoo accounts were disabled.

So what's up with that? Only Yahoo knows and they're not telling!

Thanks for sharing the beautiful fall pictures. I agree, winter is NOT my favorite time of the year. Snow is falling at 4,000' in this neck of the woods (Pacific Northwest) and our forecast for next week includes the icky white stuff.
