The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

Therefore I think it less than 50/50 they'll attack before the election. When Bush wins, I'd expect an attack sometime between Wednesday and Friday against work day targets.

Your post regarding the threat to the states is very interesting. On my way home last night I was listening to Mike Savage play clips from the translation of the tapes. The threat to the states immediately caught my attention. My take on this is that OBL is threatening to attack the individual states that vote for President Bush. I think we are looking at post election attacks on specific states.

Cheney was in Hawaii because that state had suddenly become a battleground state (with Bush up by nearly 1pt)
Sunday has HVT only around sporting events. Work week has schools, office buildings, etc.

That was not a solid sequence. The greatest expectation was that it would occure before. There was lesser speculation that it could occure after.

I think your analysis is right on. The scary question is, will the weak in the swing states buckle?

Just because UBL appears to offer an exemption to a *future* wave of attacks to U.S. states that vote against Bush does not mean a truce is in effect that exempts any of us until election day from the *next* wave of attacks. Or to be clear, it is specifically mentioned that the so-called justifications for 9/11 are still in place, and there is no explicit truce between now and election day. That is an assumption they may want us to make.


Be just as prepared for a pre-election as for a post-election attack.

If this is true, their focus remains on election process rather than election results. This argues for pre-election.

If this is not true, their focus is result and they will go for a punitive post-election attack.

I do not have enough information to make a clear call, and unless such information exists, both possibilities must be assumed.

Third possibility (more remote), is this is the culmination of the year-long psyops campaign and designed to exhaust us during pre and post election periods, and to hit us during the holidays or target the inauguration. No one can sustain a full-court press indefinitely. Therefore, assessing timing is crucial.

Well for what my 2 cents are worth I agree totally with what you have put up in the last 2 posts. Let's just hope we have enough people on top of all this to thwart anything coming our way.
