The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

I'm worried - the tape and Homeland security (on TV last night - no link) saying chatter is quiet. They interpreted this to mean that the threat was low.

PSYOPS in terrorism is designed to do just that - increase our fear. We've been on edge for a pre-election attack for months now and now with 4 days left this comes out. The chatter issue is a whole other story. Since we can only see the unclassified portion of the whole, it is hard to confirm or deny what the Feds are seeing. Normally a drop in comms is concerning. There may be something on the internals of the message traffic they've been monitoring that gives them the sense that this is not a pre-operations silence. But this info is dealt with in buildings without windows and guards with no sense of humor.

News reports indicate that the military is at a higher stage of readiness in the DC area because of the elections and terror threats. Better to have the assets in the air ready than trying to scramble.

If it was done on mistake, do you think it was intentional - perhaps a hidden message / code that would not be picked up by most people (only those speaking Arabic)?

Couldn't speculate on that. Only that flaws would suggest a bogus source.

Plane Collides With Airport Vehicle

PHILADELPHIA (KYW) A commercial airliner apparently collided Wednesday with an airport support vehicle while taxiing to a runway at Philadelphia International Airport. Now, the Federal Aviation Administration is conducting its own investigation into the incident.

CBS 3’s Walt Hunter reports with more flights being added at the airport, it’s not just the skies that are becoming crowded.

Investigators say that a US Airways Express plane with 41 passengers aboard bound for Montreal, Canada, collided with a Ford Explorer support vehicle while making its way toward the runway for takeoff.

Hunter has learned the plane’s wing slashed through the vehicle and injured its driver, Wilbur Smith: “All of a sudden, bam…I got hit. No warning, just bam. When I saw the plane, you know I really could not believe a plane had just hit me. I’m in a yellow vehicle, with yellow lights flashing and you hit me? How?”

“It not only caused substantial damage to the vehicle but it dragged the vehicle about 30 feet,” said Philadelphia Police Inspector Bill Calarulo.

Fortunately the passengers aboard the plane in addition to four crew members were not hurt. However, Smith was hospitalized with minor injuries: “The way that wing hit the car…if it would have kept on going instead of pushing me forward, I don’t think I would be sitting here right now because that wing would have come all the way to where I was at and kept on going and I would have probably been halfway decapitated or something.”

Officials confirm that the vehicle was apparently parked in the grass median near the taxi-way when the plane struck it.

FAA officials are now looking into the crash and quote: “We are investigating the cause of damage to the right wing of the aircraft. All passengers were evacuated as a precaution.”

Although there is no word yet on what caused the accident, Hunter says the passengers aboard the plane were put on another aircraft bound for their final destination.

In addition, there has been no confirmation as to whether or not regulations regarding both aircraft and support vehicles on the tarmac will be changed.

As for Smith, he has since been released from the hospital but still suffers from neck and back pains. He plans to return to work on Monday.

Sorry. I wasn't really trying to predict that. Was merely taking my previous scenario (early 2005 hit under Kerry/Edwards) and taking it the next step as far as a potential President who might be forced to declare limited military rule that would not go down well with most of us. And hence my argument for a more assertive legislature.

By 2009 the threat will be much more serious than nukes (genetic weapons). As horrifying as nukes sound to us today, there are *far* worse scenarios.

I got off on a tangent on this.
