Alif Baa is the beginning of a series of books that is widely used to teach non-natives Arabic. I know that the American University at Cairo currently uses this series of books, as do many prominent institutions teaching Arabic. We used a book called Standard Arabic for our second semester, but I would not suggest it for learning on your own. It is very good, but very difficult to grasp if you are working alone.
The follow-up to Alif Baa is Al-kitaab fii Ta'allum Al-'Arabiyya which is the book we are using now in conjunction with some materials our teacher randomly finds.
I have also used the Rosetta Stone computer program, it is quite useful for those of us who love sitting at the computer but a bit pricey for someone who is testing the waters.
I will likely be adding a bunch of links to Arabic learning sources on TM 21 in conjunction with the Arabic Image Link section I am creating. If you missed this before, check Fun With Arabic out, it is a very good online intro.

Norovirus Confirmed As Flamingo Hotel Illness (10/26/04 -Las Vegas)
(Oct. 26) -- Eyewitness News has learned that the illness that has plagued the Flamingo hotel and casino is the norovirus. We were the first to tell you about the spreading illness at the hotel. And Tuesday, the health district told us that they've had as many as 250 unconfirmed cases of norovirus -- most were Flamingo employees, and some were guests.
The Flamingo says they will fog all the 3,500 rooms in the hotel with an anti-viral chemical. They will also leave a letter in each room telling new guests about the situation.
Norovirus is spread by humans, after being picked up by fecal-oral contact. Washing hands after using the restroom is a critical preventive measure.....
You're welcome.

Hey 007/irhabi007/terrorist007/(osamah007?):
GOD IS WATCHING.
I bet you're sweating...
Thank you very much for this comprehensive list!! I will have a busy time the next few days following-up on this info. My interest in this has been piqued from our wonderful TM....the excitement of learning something entirely different....and the feeling that there could be a long-term need for people to know Arabic per the gov. backlog.
Good wishes to you always in your studies...how do you find time to fit in FR?!
Thanks for the links, bookmarked for future reference.
I like reading Stars & Stripes...seldom get a chance anymore to check it out.
You're welcome.
Do you have these?
WARNING GRAPHIC
You're welcome, I have a bunch more that I am compiling to use once I figure out what to do with them! Those links are definately the best for a beginner.
If you have any interest at all, you should give it a try. Most of the people I started with have since given up, but I find it to be very interesting and rewarding. I can only hope that what I learn will be of some use to the country in the future.
I am one of those people who does not get much done until the last minute... so I manage to find a fair amount of free time for myself, even with classwork. ;-)
Have you seen this one:
