The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Ramadan terror concerns?
Full Story

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

DEFENSE MINISTRY ON US MISSILE DEFENSE DEPLOYMENT AT BRITISH AIR FORCE BASE

IZHEVSK, October 20 (RIA Novosti)

The Russian Defense Ministry has no information on the US-British talks allegedly underway on deployment at the British Air Force base in North Yorkshire of US missile defense interceptor missiles, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said in Izhevsk, answering a RIA Novosti question on Russia's concerns in regard to talks between the US, England, Romania and Poland allegedly underway in this respect.

"As far as I know, and I think I am well informed, talks with these states are conducted as part of reconfiguration of American military presence in Europe. But I have no data about delivering any antimissiles," said the Russian defense minister.

He stressed that he had no information even about "the talks being underway."

On October 17 the Independent said British Prime Minister Tony Blair gave a secret consent to George Bush to allow deployment of US missile defense means at the base of the British Air Force.

On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry distributed an official commentary, which reads that the Russian Foreign Ministry does not either have information about the U.K.'s consent to the deployment of American interceptor missiles at the British Air Force base at Filingdales, North Yorkshire.

"We don't have official information on this account. If such a joint US-British decision really took place, it would be a new alarming step on the road of escalation of US missile defense system deployment," reads the commentary of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

A United Airlines plane from California to Chicago landed at O'Hare with six people injured aboard.

I heard that these injuries were the result of turbulence.

True. IPN sent out notices today and last night on an airport alert at St. Petersburg FLA (palne landed safely); a twin engine aircraft down in the water at Deerfield Beach, FLA; and a small plane down in the woods in Arkansas.

And of course, lest we overlook this IPN report:

Indiana - Lawrence County - Sportsman Club Rd - Fire department onsite assisting with cow stuck in a pond.

Yep.

Here's a description:

REUTERS.com: "BODY FOUND IN WHEEL WELL OF PLANE IN DETROIT" (ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""He was a thin black male in his early 20s," said Detroit Metropolitan Airport spokeswoman Barbara Hogan. She said a ramp worker found the apparent stowaway at about 1 a.m. EDT, minutes after the Boeing 737 ended its three-hour flight from Miami. Martha Pantin, a spokeswoman for AMR Corp.'s American Airlines, said she was unable to comment on reports the flight to Detroit originated in the Dominican Republic with a stopover in Miami.") That's a good question -- especially with heightened security at airports.

BIN LADEN IS LOCATED SAYS 9/11 PANALIST - PAKISTANI ALLIES KEEPING HIM SAFE

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1253705/posts

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Pentagon knows exactly where Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan, it just can't get to him, John Lehman, a member of the 9/11 Commission, said Thursday.

Lehman's remarks echoed those made Tuesday by Secretary of State Colin Powell, who said the al-Qaida leader was alive and operating in the western part of Pakistan.

Bin Laden is living in South Waziristan in the Baluchistan Mountains of the Baluchistan region, Lehman told the San Bernardino Sun after delivering a keynote speech on terrorism at Pitzer College in Claremont.

In the interview, Lehman noted, "There is an American presence in the area, but we can't just send in troops. If we did, we could have another Vietnam, and the United States cannot afford that right now."

When pressed on why the United States couldn't send troops into the region to capture the world's No. 1 terrorist, Lehman said the Baluchistan region of the country is filled with militant fundamentalists who do not recognize the legitimacy of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, a close ally of the United States.

"That is a region filled with Taliban and al-Qaida members," he said, acknowledging that Pakistan's security services also are filled with many who agree with bin Laden's beliefs and would aid him if U.S. Special Forces entered the region.

"Look," he said, "Musharraf already has had three assassination attempts on his life. He is trying to comply, but he is surrounded by people who do not agree with him. This is not like Afghanistan, where there was no compliance, and we had to go in.
