Microsoft Releases 10 Security Updates, Seven Critical

SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. released 10 security fixes for various products Tuesday, including seven that fix flaws the company said pose the highest threat to users.

The new patches apply to a variety of products, including some versions of Microsoft's Windows operating system and server software, its Internet Explorer Web browser and Excel spreadsheet program.

The seven critical flaws could allow an attacker to take control of a user's computer, while three other fixes deemed "important" - the second-highest rating - pose less of a threat. ' The Redmond software giant also rereleased a patch it put out last month because of problems with the fix and with the company's massive new security update for the latest version of Windows, which is called Service Pack 2.

The patch aimed to fix a flaw that could allow an attacker to infiltrate a computer if the user viewed a specially crafted image in the popular JPEG format.

Stephen Toulouse, a security program manager at Microsoft, said people who had Service Pack 2 and are also using Office XP didn't receive the update correctly because of a problem with the installer.

Do any of these fixes affect Microsoft products under Mac OSX (e.g., IE, Office)?

"I only saw one update for Windows XP, SP2." On the Windows Update page where you saw SP2, you should be able to either look or scroll down just a little further to see a button allowing you to "see other updates" or wording to that effect, while bypassing SP2, if that's what you want to do. You can also install SP2 and then you will see only the other updates. See also the US-CERT alerts regarding these issues:

A lot of third party software vendors are recomending, some demanding, that you not upgrade to SP2. A couple have told us that if we upgrade, it will void our service agreements.

I've been running SP2 since mid August and haven't had a single problem.

Many report problem with the re-start after downloading/installing SP/2. As of last week, a tech friend of mine said Gates had not addressed the issue yet...Approx. 15% report problems with SP/2 install.
