Mexican Migrants Launch Relay to NYC

MEXICO CITY -- Mexican migrants launched a two-month relay Sunday from Mexico's capital to New York, calling on lawmakers to grant them the right to cast absentee ballots in 2006 presidential elections and organizing undocumented workers along the way.
The binational relay is in its third year, following a 3,800-mile route through northeast Mexico, then the southern and eastern United States, with runners carrying a torch to New York City in honor of Mexico's patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Some 5,000 runners will carry the torch, sometimes passing through farm towns with only a few people, and other times -- like when the torch passes through Atlanta, which has a rapidly growing migrant population -- with thousands cheering them on.
The group is scheduled to arrive at New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral on Dec. 12, when Mexicans commemorate the day in 1531 when, according to legend, the dark-skinned virgin appeared to a poor Indian, Juan Diego, and left her image imprinted on his cloak.
Mexican migrants living in New York always celebrated Dec. 12 at St. Patrick's, leading pilgrimages from their neighborhoods but wishing they could travel to Mexico City's Basilica, as many Mexicans pilgrims do.
In 2001, at the urging of the Roman Catholic Church, they decided to try it, planning a trip that would take them from the Basilica to St. Patrick's. Each year, the march has grown, kicking off with the group celebrating a Mass in Mexico City and ending up in New York.
The route is expected to cross the border at Brownsville, Texas, on Nov. 7,

Another thing to worry about is the time frame for the run which is suspicious. I know one of the runners will be a legal Mexican who was born from illegals (need to change that law) but if an illegal is carrying the torch when they hit Brownsville it could cause an incident. Looks like they will be reaching the border gates right around election time!!
Picture CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and the NYT rushing to the border to cover evil George Bush's Border stormtroopers stopping the gallant torch of the "migrant" from passing into the states. Could tick off quite a few of the Hispanic voters now couldn't it?
Just a thought as I remember the rats trying this before with the Haitian boat people I think around the time of the mid-term elections. Somehow the leftist news media had copters in the air waiting on the boat before it entered the harbor to get the perfect shot of the invaders jumping from the truck boat. Remember Jeb held a news conference and that Black radical congresswoman was johnny on the spot in begging him to "call your brother and don't let him send these people back to oppression."
Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
Hmmmph. The virgin of Juarez, maybe.
It looks like its a push to be able to vote in Mexican elections from aboard which Mexican law says is illegal. The article is so poorly written I am not so sure.
Is this from The Onion?
Uh, yeah, let them vote in the 2006 Presidential election.
Sure.
It says Nov. 7th but they could just as well reach the border on Nov. 1st.
We'll see, hopefully they will stay on schedule and not invade the country until after the election.
...and its Eastertime too.
2006 presidential elections
they can vote all they want for President in 2006.....im sure it will do them a lot of good too.....
"with runners carrying a torch to New York City in honor of Mexico's patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe. "
I don't get it. Why are they coming here to nyc. I don't think the virgin of guadalupe lives here. Maybe she has a penthouse on the upper east side. I rarely get up there.
Yes, they are doing a relay, basically, for the right to an absentee vote while they are illegally in the U.S.
Heck, they are trying to give them drivers licenses in the States so why not?
The world is upside down.
Well I hope INS officials are on hand to gather them up and return them to their native land.
This article is a poorly written mess. The event is in support of giving Mexican migrant workers in the US the right to vote by absentee ballot in the 2006 Mexican election. This is currently illegal under Mexican law.
Well, that's BS.
They are still Mexican citizens, right?
First they should be demonstrating for the education required to READ. Nice if they'd take baths on election days too so the rest of us dont have to have our noses blistered with their celebrated cultural differences...
This would be the 2006 Mexican Presidential elections.
Reading further into the article, we find:
'Under current Mexican law, Mexicans must return home to vote. Although there is a proposal in Congress that would grant Mexicans the right to vote while living abroad, it appears to have little chance at approval because of controversy over how to avoid fraud.'
They want to receive their Mexican absentee ballots while staying illegally here in the US.
And why not? Bush wants to give them US Social Security benefits after they return home to Mexico, so why shouldn't Fox agree to allow them to vote in Mexican elections while staying illegally here in the US.
Because if they had to leave Mexico to find clean water and a job, then you know they'd vote him out of office.
At least that's what he told his wife.
She didn't buy it, either.
But if they stay in Mexico, then how will they get the US Social Security benefits that Bush is going to give them through his Totalization Agreement?
Make no mistake about it. This has nothing to do with nationality and everything to do with draining US taxpayer resources to support all third world countries.
Mexico is only the beginning.
You are actually asking why Mexicans, who break federal law and invade another country by the millions, shouldn't be allowed to vote absentee??
Again, upside down world.
