Governor's Sword Falls on Illegal Immigrants' Driver's Licenses
The Sacramento Union ^ | Sept. 23, 2004 | Ryan Rose

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger terminated the latest version of the license bill, AB2895, yesterday. It was Schwarzenegger’s twenty-second veto since entering office last year. In a simple statement that read more like a condolence than a mandate, the Republican governor said he could not sign the bill because it would make California too vulnerable.

“One of the most important duties of the Governor of a state is to protect its citizens. Determining the true identity and history of an individual is a key component of that protection,” the governor wrote. “This bill does not adequately address the security concerns that my Department of Homeland Security and I have and I cannot support it.”

A similar bill was sign by former Gov. Gray Davis before his removal from office. Schwarzenegger repealed that law, written by State Senator Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, after the October recall election. Upon rescinding the bill, however, Schwarzenegger said he would work to develop another law to serve the needs of the illegal immigrant population.

Prior to 1994, illegal immigrants driving without licenses were a low law enforcement priority in California. Laws similar to the one just vetoed by the governor exist in 10 other states.

Well, Arnie took a centrist position..but he is playing the politics of the moment. While citing his reason as security, which is of grave concern, he is still not addressing the issue of THE PRESENCE OF ILLEGAL ALIENS COMING ACROSS OUR BORDERS.

The political paradox comes to our state in the form of a $30 BILLION DEBT created by crooked liberalism, a debt that must be eliminated soon, YET WE CONTINUE TO PAY OUT OBSCENE AMOUNTS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO SUPPORT ILLEGAL ALIENS THAT HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE IN OUR COUNTRY OR STATE!!!

Why do we hate politicians???

Actully it's very clever. By denoting on illegal's licenses that they are illegal we would actually be collecting a database of who the illegals are and where they live. That's why the pro-illgal RATS will never go for it.

Arnie is not stupid, by any means...and he does have an agenda to clean up this state. I am not in any way in favor of UNCONTROLLED ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, under any circumstance. I am also against the California taxpayer having to pay a bill for criminals to exist in our state. It is totally unfair and obscene. Welcome to liberalism.

The state can and should finally adopt a system TO REGISTER, AND TRACK, AND AUTHORIZE ALL NON-CITIZEN ALIENS IN THIS STATE. And the ones that do not want to cooperate, should be permanently throw out. Our present "system" is TOTALLY out of control, sapping state resources, in the face of huge state problems that have a much higher priority than pandering to criminals.

I live on an old, quiet street just a few blocks from a California elementary school. Each morning of every year the illegal Mexican mothers have their children by the hand taking them to the BRAND NEW elementary school I am paying for. Usually they go in groups of mothers with their several small children never a word of English is spoken, of the 4 mothers walking down the street this morning all 4 are pregnant. They may not have DRIVERS LICENSES but they can walk in for all the free services that I have to pay for. These may be "nice families" but can anyone in power hear the word ILLEGAL.
Drivers licenses, long lines at airports, poor schools that cost a fortune...these are not the cause they are some of the effects of our Lack of a strong border policy. All that could change if we really believed we are at war. Start sending them back and let it be know our policy is shoot to kill. WE ARE AT WAR and if it is not terrorists or deadly drugs it is people that are perfectly willing to drain every dollar out of our tax base.

Unfortunately California can't throw anybody out of the state. Immigration is a Federal issue. Until the Feds decide to do something about it what Arnold wants is probably all the state can do.

I still fail to understand why an illegal alien applying for a driver's license isn't told to sit in the waiting room for a minute while the paperwork is processed - and then is immediately met by local law enforcement.

If a deadbeat dad tries to renew his license, he is arrested. If a felon tries to renew his license, he is arrested. If you have too many outstanding parking tickets when you renew your license, you are arrested. Why are illegal aliens treated any differently?

Driving is a priviledge, and not a right. These buys broke the law by being here. They just want all of us to forget about it. They pledge allegiance to a foreign nation. They are not here to better this country, rather to send money to their relatives in their home country. They are not to be extended more benefits. They should be stripped of all benefits. Undocumented is a misnomer. They are illegal status in need of immediate deportation.

Agreed -- but he can prevent state money from supporting these people. He can end the LIBERAL IMMIGRANT WELFARE SYSTEM in this state...that HE CAN DO!!!!

The feds (read: George W. Bush) have decided to do something about illegal immigration.

They decided to embrace it and reward it.

Why else would Bush have created the Social Security Totalization Agreement with Mexico (signed with Mexico on June 29, 2004) that will allow millions of former, current and future Mexican illegal aliens to apply for and receive literally hundreds of billions of dollars in US Social Security benefits for themselves, their wives and their children after having worked for as little as 1-1/2 years.

Note that we US citizens have to work for at least 10 years before we're eligible to apply.

Also note that the illegal aliens' wife and children are eligible even if they've never stepped foot in the US.

With conservatives like Bush, who needs liberals?

Were we not all taught driving is a privilege?

Why are these politicos and all of our so-called representatives even entertaining the thought of allowing criminals to obtain drivers licenses?

This makes me ill. The only MAJOR NEGATIVE of the Bush presidency. Is the Mexican vote that critical? I guess it is. For this action ALONE, if there was a better candidate than Bush running, he would get my vote. But there is NO WAY I WOULD PUT A TREASONOUS SOCIALIST-MARXIST IN THE WHITE HOUSE...I care too much about this country.

I can only see ONE REASON. Washington is now a country-club, a government for and by Washington and its professional politicians, not a government for and by the people, not any more. As such, THE ALMIGHTY VOTE is far more important than what is right for the people that empower those in Washington. It is killing this country, bit by bit.

Fascinating that we have now descended so far as to actually have someone writing about serving the "needs of the illegal immigrant population".

The only thing they "need" is expedited deportation.
