And you thought the 2000 presidential election was wild.
How about this for 2004: George Bush is re-elected president, and your new vice president is ... John Edwards.
Yes, it could happen.
If the right states favor Republican incumbents Bush and Dick Cheney on Election Day and the rest go for Democrats John Kerry and Edwards, the result could be a 269-269 tie in the Electoral College, which chooses the president and vice president.
Under the Constitution, the new House of Representatives would then elect the president by majority vote, with each state's House delegation getting one vote.
The winner almost surely would be Bush, since the Republican Party is expected to control most delegations in the House, where it now has a 30-20 edge.
The Senate would elect the vice president by majority vote, choosing Cheney or Edwards, with each senator getting one vote.
And if Democrats gain two Senate seats Nov. 2, the body could pick Edwards, the senator and trial lawyer from Raleigh, N.C.
A dozen or more scenarios could produce a draw in the Electoral College, said Larry Sabato, a political scientist at the University of Virginia.

Yes, but it's more interesting because it's an implicit admission that Kerry's NOT gonna win..
But Democrats won't gain control of the Senate. Democrats are going to lose to Republicans in Georgia and South Carolina for sure (+2 R) and possibly North Carolina and South Dakota, too.
PLEASE PLEASE Mt Ranier blow and bury this Sack of Sh*t city!
Says who?
All the more reason to make sure that the GOP retains control of the Senate.
The 12th Amendment.
And fish could fly if they had bicycles!
My own personal tracking has W with over 300 electorals.
Democrats are going to lose big in NC, SC, GA, FL, LA, OK, SD, CO, and AK. Even maybe in WI. And if its a big enough win, in WA. If everything goes right (and it is trending that way), we will have 56-58 Senate seats next year.
Dems are getting desperate if they're already playing this game of "what if?". BTW, the GOP will gain NC, SC, GA, FL, LA, and SD in the senate. They will only lose IL, giving the GOP a net gain of 5 seats. Cheney will continue to be the president of the Senate for another 4 years.
This is hilarious. The libs are so desperate that they have come up with this crazy string of scenarios that will only work if all the stars are lined up and Jupiter is aligned with Mars. We, my freeper friends, have witnessed the libs last great hope for this election.
And Florida.
"If frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their a$$es."
Yay! Down with Cheney!
I can plausibly envision an election fiasco like in 2000 but not this outcome. Number one reason being that the Senate will remain Republican.
But if the election is anywhere near the tie scenario, there will be several court challenges, the primary one being with the Colorado fiasco.
The President would simply ignore Edwards and Edwards would call some whiny press conferences to complain about being ignored.
No, what he means (I think) is who says it has to be Kerry OR Edwards. It could be (gasp!) HILLARY CLINTON!
(Sorry, just taunting the Hillarophobes.)
