SANTA FE, United States (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) hailed actor Christopher Reeve "America's hero," and vowed to keep up the campaign for stem cell research championed by the man known best as "Superman."

In a statement released here, Kerry said he considered Reeve, who died Sunday nine years after being paralyzed from the neck down, a friend.

"He was an inspiration to all of us and gave hope to millions of Americans who are counting on the life-saving cures that science and research can provide.

"He met every challenge with a courage and character that broke new ground in this struggle," Kerry said.

Reeve was one of the country's leading actors when his horse threw him during a riding competition in Virginia. He suffered two broken cervical vertebrae and damage to the spinal cord that left him unable to breathe without a respirator.

Reeve was best known at the time for his leading role in four "Superman" films in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

He went on to become an outspoken advocate for controversial research with embryonic stem-cells which has become an issue in the US presidential election.

President George W. Bush (news - web sites) allowed federal money to be spent on research using only existing stem cell lines. Kerry supports broader stem-cell research.

I'd love to see the full test of Kerry's comments rather than AFPs vetted, paraphased, and sanitized for Kerry's protection, version. Either way though, the implication of Kerry's statement is clear.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Kerry got the news of Reeve's death. Did he hang up and shout "YES!"? Did he dance a little jig? Did he excitedly phone McAuliffe with the news? Noone but Mama T knows...

I hope it does. Then W can tell sKerry that he has never opposed private research; only government funding.

The press is going to Deify Reeve. It was an accident of his own making and because he was so wealthy he could afford to do much more than the average person who would find themselves in that tragic situation. People die everyday of his horrible circumstance. I just hate it when the Press goes overboard when a celebrity dies. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

Yep. This thing needs to be explained to the public. The Dims continually scream that Bush "banned" stem cell research. And the sheeple believe them.

I wonder if the shock that he actually tongue-kissed Michael Caine finally caught up with him.

That knowledge would kill me.

"He met every challenge with a courage and character that broke new ground in this struggle," Kerry said.

Certainly a ground-breaking concept for you, Senator Sominex.
