GROWING DEEP AND STRONG One day, my mother and I were working together in the garden where we were transplanting plants for the third time. Grown from seed in a small container, the plants had been transferred to a larger container; then transplanted into the garden. Now, because I was moving, we were transplanting them once again. Inexperienced as a gardener, I turned to my green-thumbed mother. "Isnt this bad for them?" I asked, as we dug them up and shook the dirt from the roots. "Wont it hurt these plants, being uprooted and transplanted so many times?" "Oh" my mother replied. "Transplanting doesnt hurt them. In fact, its good for the ones that survive. Thats how their roots grow strong. Their roots will grow deep, and they will make strong plants". Often, Ive felt like those small plants uprooted and turned upside. Sometimes Ive endured the change willingly, sometimes reluctantly, but usually my reaction has been a combination. Wont this be hard on me? I ask. Wouldnt things be better if things remained the same? Thats when I remember my mothers words: Thats how the roots grow deep and strong. Chaplain Lisa Bohannon |

|
*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT*
Beginning Friday, October 29th, we will begin running a 3 day Halloween thread. Mixed into the Halloween Thread will be music, entertainment, silliness, and everything that you expect from the Canteen Crew.
Also, the Sunday Guest Chaplain Thread will run as a separate thread on October 31st. With the election only two days away, we want to keep the Chaplain doors open for everyone!!
|
*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR NOVEMBER 1st-3rd*
From November 1st through the 3rd, we will run an ongoing Canteen Favorites Thread. This is being done because of the expected high traffic that FR will be experiencing the day before, during, and after the election.
And we want the FR Canteen to be a safe haven for those that want to escape the political events of those days. So? If you need to take a breather, come visit the Troops and Canteen right here!!
Thank you!

For the Safety of Our Soldiers
Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge
in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy.
Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties.
Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep
them safe from all evil and harm.
May the power of your love enable them to return
home in safety, that with all who love them, they may
ever praise you for your loving care.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Sgt. Alvin York
1887-1964
His last days as a civilian were difficult ones for Alvin. The frank mountain man faced a dilemma: his religion told him not to go to war, and his patriotism told him he should. After two days and a night spent in prayer on a mountainside, York resolved to go.
York arrived in the front lines in France on June 27, 1918, but his appointment with destiny came on October 8, 1918, in the Argonne forest. York, by then a Corporal, was ordered to take his squad on a surprise attack against an emplacement of German machine guns.
They surprised a group of 15 to 20 Germans, including a Major, and took them prisoners without a shot. But the Major called out in German, and suddenly York's squad was under fire from a ridge less than 30 yards away. With all but two of his squad killed, York "exchanged shots" with the machine gunners. York wrote in his diary: "There were over 30 of them in continuous action and all I could do was touch the Germans off as fast as I could. I was sharpshooting. I don't think I missed a shot. It was no time to miss." Suddenly, a German Lieutenant and five soldiers jumped from a trench and charged him with fixed bayonets, York took cool aim and shot the last man first, then the man next farthest away, and so on, until all six had fallen.
Finally, the German Major offered to surrender his entire command, if York would "just stop shooting." Upon return to Allied lines, it was determined that York had taken 132 prisoners. The next morning, 28 dead Germans were found at the scene of the fight: the same number of shots York said that he fired. 35 German machine guns and assorted small arms and ammunition were also captured.
Returning to the scene of his triumph, York prayed for those who had died, German and American alike. For his exploits, York was awarded The Medal of Honor, as well as the French Croix de Guerre, the Italian Croce de Guera, and the American Distinguished Service Cross. He was also promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Have A Wonderful Day
Read: Proverbs 11:24-31
Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7
Bible In One Year: Isaiah 34-36; Colossians 2
After admiring a painting in a woman's home, I was surprised by her generosity when she took it down and gave it to me.
I've seen many similar acts of kindness. For years, my mother-in-law hung on to her archaic-looking refrigerator so she could give more money to the Lord's work.
A Christian family I know had saved money to buy a new car. But when they heard of a desperate need on a mission field, they kept their old car and gave to missions instead.
I've also heard of a Christian businessman in Ohio who puts something in his pocket every morning to give awaya pen, a trinket, even a ten-dollar bill. As the day unfolds, he looks for someone who would be blessed by receiving a gift. "By constantly looking for an opportunity to give," he says, "I have a wonderful day."
The old saying "Takers eat well, but givers sleep well" is only partially true. According to Proverbs 11:25, givers also eat well: "The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself."
We must not give grudgingly or merely out of a sense of duty but from the heart. It's the generous, cheerful giver whom God loves (2 Corinthians 9:7). Joanie Yoder
Give as you would to the Master
If you met His searching look;
Give as you would of your substance
If His hand the offering took. Anon.
Many people readily give God credit, but few cheerfully give Him cash.
