**I thought Indians were now "indigenous peoples"**

The first time I saw that term I thought it said "indigent people".

That's what they call people sitting near the skid-row shelters. Indigents.

A lot of them were, until they got into the casino business.

There was once a Mongol chieftain of the steppes named Temujin who codified the rule of nations and political science in a nutshell; "You may have what you can take. You may keep what you can hold."

The Amerindians couldn't hold it, so we took it. Case closed.

American Indians are a bunch of whiny cry babies.

Yup. Every single one of us is. You got it. Wow.

They lost the wars and just can't accept the fact that it was never "their land" to begin with.

When you say "They" do you mean all American Indians? Because maybe I'm mistaken, but my people have never been militarily defeated by the United States. Ever. In fact, the first treaty between the Haudenosaunee and the United States - which was asked for by the United States because they could not defeat us - was the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, 1784. The second treaty, again asked for by the United States is the Pickering Treaty of 1794. Since that time we have NEVER submitted to United States governmental trusteeship of our land. Other tribes may have been defeated, but not us.

However, they sure don't mind the white mans cash in their casinos.

And the various states sure love the revenue they get from the indian casinos, too.

American Indians had no concept of property rights so there was nothing to "steal." One tribe would move against another in unmerciful slaughters and that would be "property exchange."

Actually, much like white people in Europe and the "new world", we fought wars over land. In that regard, there was zero difference between the europeans and the indians.

Civilized men owe nothing to savages.

Ummm yeah. The european comers to teh new world were soooooo civilized. Keep telling yourself that, and maybe eventually enough people will believe it.

Human nature is human nature, and it crosses all racial boundaries.

IT'S COLOUMBUS DAY GET OVER IT YOU CRY BABIES GOD IN CA. THE AMERICAN INDIANS ARE MAKING MILLIONS WITHOUT PAYING STATE TAXES HOW FAIR IS THAT

Ok, ya know what? The Liberal Left has co-opted pretty much the extremists of every race, culture, creed, etc... and use it for their own ends. This doesn't mean that every single American Indian out there hates this nation and will protest it at the drop of a hat. In fact, quite the opposite is true - American Indians have served this country in numbers that are far more proportionate than any other group. Most of us love this country and have served. The Left is a very vocal minority, but with the amount of noise they make, most will believe they are more numerous than they actually are...

IT'S COLOUMBUS DAY GET OVER IT YOU CRY BABIES

Hey, if people don't feel like celebrating a day dedicated to a murdering scumbag, and decide to tell the truth about Columbus, it doesn't necessarily make them cry babies. It just means what they have to say is unpopular. If you dont' like what they have to say, ignore them, or say so, but I believe that in this country we are still allowed to hold unpopular opinions and vocalize them - or is that right only applicable to some people?

GOD IN CA. THE AMERICAN INDIANS ARE MAKING MILLIONS WITHOUT PAYING STATE TAXES HOW FAIR IS THAT

How many indians have you ever met who pay no taxes? I've visited more reservations than I can remember as part of conservative outreach, and I have yet to meet a single American Indian who pays zero taxes. We ALL pay federal income taxes, regardless of where we live, and ALL casino compacts with the states - including California - require the payment of ALL applicable state taxes. The only difference is that the profits for the casinos belong to the tribe itself, which is NOT taxable by the states since states cannot levy taxes on the indians without congressional approval. The tribes, however, as part of the casino compacts, pay the states large amounts of money from those profits - in fact they pay MORE than other businesses. Is that fair? Then, with what's left, they upgrade or implement infrastructure, roads, schools, environmental cleanup, etc...

WHICH NEXT ARE THE ANTI WAR PEOPLE GOING TO PROTEST VETERANS DAY

Ummm I don't know where you've been lately, but they already do - it doesn't even have to be Veteran's Day for them to be out at the Arlington National Cemetary protesting the war. But, this really has nothing to do with Indians, and the comparison is completely unfair. Protesting Columbus Day is not even remotely comparable to scumbags who would protest Veterans' Day.

There is clear evidence of a culture in the Americas that predated what we now call the Native American or Indian culture. It possibly came by way of the South Pacific. Of course, some modern people of Indian ancestry want to cover that up. The fact is that you can't undo history, so get over it.

Actually, I think you'd find that most of us would love to know more about prehistoric times in what is now North America - It would tell us even more about our ancestors, how they lived, where they came from, and so much more.

If any want to cover it up, it is a small minority of liberals with agendas. Certainly not all of us.

First of all I was one of the protesters and you guys got the facts twisted around. We didn't protest against the "Italians" or their culture. We protested against Columbus and what he represented as a person, and what is still in tact today. "Colonization." To occupy and impose Marshall law on indigenous peoples; to displace or relocate indigenous peoples for the purpose of establishing "civilized" order. And all that basically means is Imperialism, which of course brings oppression as the "Assimilation" process begins. And contrary to popular belief, we're trying to move on but it's hard when you got blatant racism and disrespect in your face everyday. Columbus was as much a tyrant to the Indigenous peoples here as Hitler was to the Jews. And nobody will dare speak on that issue nowadays, which is a good thing. But you don't see the Germans parading around with Nazi signs everywhere neither. What it all boils down to is even today in this day and age it's still okay to shit on the indigenous populous. You don't see sports teams with names like Carolina Negroes, New Jersey Rabbi's, or Washington Red Necks. It would never happen. But it's okay if your talking about "Indians". And then people have the nerve to paint images of the indigenous peoples as being immigrants in their own country. And I would never expect a white anglo-saxon prodestant to understand that because they are the beneficiary's of everything that's happened. And what's really funny in a twisted way is when we were protesting, we were peaceful and didn't get out of line at all. And when we got arrested and hauled off, the Columbus day parade came by and the people (all whites of course) came by and screamed racist slurs and threw candy at the people. Flipping everybody the bird as they passed by. But even though the anger and hatred for my people still exist and bares down on us, I personally will still take a stand and fight the ignorance and injustices inflicted upon my people. And that's the truth! Prayers and Blessings. Aho!

History is the story of conquest and assimilation. Instead of protesting against a sailor (one of many) who set in motion a chain of events leading to what we have today, this great nation, why not strive for identity and recognition through incluson, not separation.
Shameful things have passed, yes.
But relegation to tax free casinos on defined lands is not what I would call grasping opportunity.
Get out there, become part of the great experiment, and stop lamenting that it ever happened.
