SYDNEY, Australia Oct. 9, 2004 Prime Minister John Howard scored a stunning victory in Australia's federal election Saturday in a vote ensuring the country keeps its troops in Iraq.
Labor Party leader Mark Latham conceded defeat in a speech to his supporters in western Sydney, saying he called Howard to congratulate him on his fourth straight election victory.
"Tonight was not our night," Latham said.
The election was widely seen abroad as the first referendum for the three leaders who launched the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, with President Bush facing a ballot next month and British Prime Minister Tony Blair probably facing voters next year.
The Labor Party had vowed to bring the approximate 900 Australian troops deployed in and around Iraq home by Christmas, while Howard insisted they will stay until Iraqis ask them to leave.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard, right, shakes the hand of a constituent who said to him, "Mr. Howard, if you win, I would move to Europe," ouside a polling both in his electorate of Bennelong in Sydney, Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004. Teresa and Kerry's sister tried in vain to defeat Howard, a key member of the US led Iraq coalition. They would have LOVED if Latham won so they could shout that the coalition is busting up. Despite a recent bombing at the Austr. embassy in Indonesia, and other threats, Australians held tough and, unlike Spain, didn't cave to a candidate that pledged to leave Iraq immediately. Bravo. Let's hope our fellow Americans are just as wise in a few weeks.

Good News for Australia and Good News for America!! Way to Go, Aussies!

Easy to forget about the Aussie elections with all that was happening last night. Good to see that they still understand what's at stake and gave Howard a vote of confidence.

OUTSTANDING!!!!
So much for Al-Qaeda influencing elections.

This is huge for us. I haven't seen any of the morning shows that have really talked about the significance of the PM's reelection (probably because they know that this is a win for the President and a loss for the liberals).
Coupling this with the fact that the elections went off w/o a hitch in Afghanistan is going to pay off big for our side.
This is going to be a good weekend indeed!

The Spanish citizens are cowards bred of post-modern social force theory. That nation's majority believes that Islamofascism is irresistible and that appeasement is the way to survive.
An agenda similar to Kerry's...and Chamberlain's.

Australia has always been a friend to the United States and that is in to contrast to Canada who enjoys the largesse of the United States and never misses an opportunity to knock everything we do.
