HEADLINE: American group to make film calling for end to Iraq sanctions
DATELINE: BAGHDAD, Aug 12
BODY:
Voices in the Wilderness, a US group fighting to lift the UN embargo against Iraq, said Saturday it will produce a film about the suffering the sanctions have caused.
The documentary, which will be filmed in the southern Iraqi city of Basrah, is intended "to show the tragic result of the sanctions," the group said in a news release distributed in Baghdad.
Basrah was severely damaged during the 1980-81 Iran-Iraq war and in the 1991 Gulf War, in which Iraqi occupation forces were ousted from neighboring Kuwait.
Efforts to rebuild the city's infrastructure have been hampered by the sanctions, which were imposed after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.
Former US Marine Scott Ritter, who worked as a UN arms inspector in Iraq, said August 3 he was making his own documentary to counter what he said was unsubstantiated and inaccurate information Washington had spread about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
The UN embargo on Iraq is not supposed to be lifted until the UN verifies whether Iraq has eliminated its weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles. However, that process is currently frozen, because Iraq refuses to allow new inspectors into the country.

Fire up the ping lists ... we've got some pajama sleuthing to do here.
D]uring the mid-to-late 1990s Saddam issued a presidential decree directing the IIS [Iraqi Intelligence Service] to recruit UNSCOM inspectors, especially American inspectors. To entice their cooperation, the IIS was to offer the inspectors preferential treatment for future business dealings with Iraq, once they completed their duties with the United Nations.

HEADLINE: Aziz hails security council members urging for embargo end
DATELINE: BAGHDAD, Dec 20
BODY:
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz here on Tuesday praised UN Security Council members which back the lifting of the four-year international sanctions imposed on Iraq.
Aziz "hailed the position adopted by well-intentioned parties in the security council toward the suffering of Iraq's children, and their recognition that Iraq has complied with the UN resolutions," the state-run agency INA reported.
Although he did not name the countries, Aziz was probably referring to Russia, China and France, which have called for a gradual lifting of the sanctions despite vehement US and British opposition.
He told a congress of Iraqi emmigrants that the United States was "responsible for keeping up the blocade," referring to oil and trade embargo imposed on Iraq after its August 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
"The United States is hindering all efforts (to lift the sanctions) and inventing false pretexts to justify its iniquitous stance," Aziz added, branding US policy as "colonialist."
Iraq recognised Kuwait on November 10 meeting a key condition for lifting the sanctions. But four days later they were renewed by the security council which argued Baghdad still had to comply with resolutions on disarmament and the human rights.

HEADLINE: 70 US lawmakers call for end to Iraq sanctions
BYLINE: Olivier Knox
DATELINE: WASHINGTON, Feb 15
BODY:
UN economic sanctions against Iraq have not toppled Saddam Hussein but have created a humanitarian crisis, and must be lifted, a group of 70 US lawmakers urged President Bill Clinton in a letter released Tuesday.
The bipartisan group from the House of Representatives, including the chamber's number two Democrat, David Bonior, said it supported maintaining the ban on sales of military equipment and materials to the regime.

Here is a good one:

A quote from the article:
In a recent letter to Kofi Annan, UN secretary general, Igor Ivanov, Russia's foreign minister, complained that the government was coming under increasing pressure from the "federal assembly, many social and political interests, and business and industrial circles . . .in favour of mitigating the limitations imposed on Russia by the sanctions in the field of its commercial and economic relations with Iraq."
The Russian letter underlines deepening divisions in the UN Security Council over Iraqi policy. Jacques Chirac, France's president, last week made clear his disapproval of the ongoing sanctions. "We have never been in breach of the UN sanctions, even though we consider this sanctions policy is dangerous, inhuman and inappropriate," he said.
The Russian and French positions are giving Iraq hope that the sanctions, if not lifted, will soon become meaningless. In an interview with the FT, Tariq Aziz, Iraq's deputy prime minister, said the Russian letter proved that Iraq's trading partners were growing increasingly impatient with the embargo.
