Sorry I forgot to answer your freepmail. Please forgive me.

Texas is great! My ancestors came here very early and our family never left. You said you wanted to be about an hour from a big town.

I would direct you to the hill country. North and west of San Antonio and west of Austin. Beautiful rocky hills, cedar and small oaks and clear running streams and rivers. Nice climate too. Hot in the summer but lacking the humidity of the coast and the eastern part of the state.

East Texas is beautiful too. Pine and hardwood forest but an hour north of Houston you are still in Houston and it is growing that way.

If I could choose any place to live, the hill country would be it. It is beautiful. Truly.

What towns are there in the hill country. Fredericksburg is the only sizeable town I see on the map.

I'm a native Texan, born in Dallas, raised in Houston. Out of any of the places I have ever lived in Texas, I would choose the area around San Antonio.

I actually lived in San Antonio proper when I was there. I was transferred there by my employer. I would move back there in a heartbeat if I could.

Semi-funny story:
I had been living in Dallas when I was transferred to San Antonio. I had a friend living in SA and I was going to stay with her until my apartment was ready for me. I asked her how long I should allow for my commute to the office. She told me the traffic would be awful so I should allow extra time. Well, I was used to my commute in Dallas taking me anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour or more so I left her place at 7:20. Got to the office at 7:30.

I imagine traffic is a little more congested now than it was in the early 90's.
