Kerry's Stunning Senate Record

John Kerry’s Stunning Senate Record

While analyzing the two presidential candidates Friday night on FOX’s Hannity and Colmes, former education secretary William J. Bennett made the statement that President Bush, unlike Senator Kerry, has a real job. Co-host Alan Colmes took offense at this: “That's -- Do you want to take a shot at someone? I don't think that is a nice thing to say.” Bennett explained that members of the executive branch, whether the president or a governor, must make sure the infrastructure is working smoothly. They also have to “educate the kids, build the highways.” Conversely he asserted the Senate, “is mostly a debating society. People can take it seriously and do well . . . . Kerry did not take his work very seriously in the Senate.” Bennett’s comments are not without substance. And Mr. Kerry’s contribution to the United States Senate merely backs up that point. Consider the resolution introduced in the Senate June 4, 2003 by 20 senators, including John Kerry: “Senate Concurrent Resolution 49--Designating the week of June 9, 2003, as National Oceans Week.” The resolution calls the ocean “truly the last frontier on Earth for science and civilization.” (Golly, why didn’t people in San Francisco just start a suburb in the ocean instead of building the Marina district?”) The resolution does point out the facts that the oceans sustain 80 percent of life on earth, play a critical role in regulating climate (as Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne demonstrated) and contain “vast energy and mineral resources that are critical to the economy of the United States and the world.” And at the very last (this is the clincher) “oceans are vital to our national security.” The resolution therefore not only designates the week of June 9 as National Oceans Week, it “[urges] the president to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate recognition, programs, ceremonies, and activities to further ocean literacy, education, and exploration.” Senator Kerry had this to say about the resolution: “I am proud to cosponsor this resolution . . . . In 1998 we recognized the International Year of the Oceans”—(Where was I? I thought 1998 was the Year of the Tiger)—“and it is time we underscore the importance of oceans in our daily lives through an annual celebration of National Oceans Week.” Kerry went on to say that “We are making progress in restoring our over fished stocks to sustainable levels, and we are committed to staying the course to reduce mortality, improve water quality and restore habitat. (Is that why windsurfing is Kerry’s sport of choice?) But we must press forward to ensure all nations are pulling their weight in providing sustainable fisheries management.” (How will a simple resolution declaring National Oceans Week in the United States have any effect on how the people of say, Tonga, use the ocean’s resources?) Kerry pointed out that, “Living marine resources, particularly highly migratory species like tuna and swordfish, know no boundaries, (Well perhaps we should teach them where the boundaries are) and we cannot tolerate lawlessness by any nation in the management of these stocks.” (Ah, the resolute leader of the free world, John Kerry, will not tolerate lawlessness . . . in management of fishing stocks?) Kerry ends by congratulating the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy—set up in the year 2000—for their research and recommendations, but warns, “Despite these great efforts, there is much more to do.” (So mark your calendars for the week of June 9, National Oceans Week.”) Then there is Senate Resolution 295, submitted for consideration on February 2, 2004 by Senators Kerry, Kennedy, Reed, and Chafee. This is “a resolution congratulating the New England Patriots on their victory in the Super Bowl XXXVIII.” Here are Senator Kerry’s comments concerning this resolution:

Mr. President, backed by the heartiest fans in the world, the New England Patriots are once again the greatest football team in the Nation. I want to join so many others in commending the Patriots for their marvelous and miraculous season, in which the team overcame injuries and a slow start to end up with a fifteen-game winning steak and a second Super Bowl championship in three years. From the wise stewardship of Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick to the Tom Brady-led offense and the Ty Law-led defense, the Patriots are a team in the fullest sense of the word. Congratulations also to the Carolina Panthers, who made Super Bowl XXXVIII one of the most memorable season-ending games in U.S. professional sports history.

For some reason, Mr. Kerry did not mention Janet Jackson’s contribution to making the Super Bowl “memorable.” Consequently, Senator Tom Daschle ordered that Kerry’s statement be printed in the Congressional Record. Senator Kerry was not there to deliver this speech. He was campaigning in New Mexico, praising the New England Patriots in front of his Southwestern audience. (Whoops. Another missed day on the job at the U.S. Senate.) All part of a hard day’s work.

Though Kerry's record deserves to be posted more widely, the new response time of FR needs to be noted (by me).

I think that I must owe John Kerry an apology. He keeps saying that he can relate to the average person that will vote for him. I didn't believe it now I do. He doesn't show up for work and neither do they.

These are the type of questions that need to be asked, in public, of both the Johns.

Can anyone list the eight bills on which Kerry was lead sponsor that were passed into law? I think one of them may have been a bill to change the name of a street in Massachusetts.

That John Kerry's long record in the senate has not been in the forefront of this campaign staggers my sense of reality! His record of betrayal of America's security should be on the front pages of every newspaper in the country! And should be the subject for every talking head on TV! That it isn't suggests something quite sinister in the MSM, don't you think?

Did anyone hear Dick Morris slam Kerry on Hannity & Colmes last night? He said neither Clinton, nor anyone else in that administration had ever brought up Kerry's name. He was basically a non-entity.

One of them was to rename a Federal building in Massachusetts. You can find his sorry record at:
