My gripes with the Martin Luther King Holiday are many. First off, everyone should expect Martin Luther King would speak on behalf of his people. The real heroes of human rights were those that choose to speak and take stands for those that were not their people. Thousands died protecting the human rights of others long before Martin Luther King.
This is one piece of legislation President Reagan should have not signed. If there had to be a national day of observance for Human Rights, it should have encompassed all that have worked for such rights, not a single person.
This was also passed and signed by politicians in hopes it would translate into votes. National holidays are very expensive to the government and business. This day of remembrance doesn't come free of costs.
I hope this holiday is changed to acknowledge the contributions of all that worked for human rights if it stays as a holiday at all.
