LOS ANGELES While much of the War on Terror has focused on overseas efforts, one area where the increased security has paid off is Arizona's border with Mexico.
The Arizona Border Control Initiative (search) (ABC), which was launched in March, is upgrading equipment and adding manpower. Hundreds of additional agents have been assigned to the region and unmanned aerial vehicles assist in patrolling the difficult terrain.
In the last seven months, more than 350,000 illegal immigrants have been apprehended, marijuana seizures have doubled to more than 176 tons and more than 2 tons of cocaine have been confiscated at the border compared to only 86 pounds last year.
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge (search) said the government has done more in the last 18 months than in the previous 10 years, but cautioned, "We still have a way to go."
However, some environmental advocates are not pleased with the ABC Initiative and are concerned the government is ignoring the risks illegal immigrants are taking to avoid detection and the effect that the increased border patrol is having on endangered species.
Jenny Neeley, a program associate with Arizona Defenders of Wildlife (search), said, "Our policy does not stop people from coming into this country. It moves the places where they cross they used to cross in urban areas, now they're crossing in the desert.....

Now start cleaning them out of NJ, NYC, Kalifornia, NM, etc. I heard that France will take them.
Is this a joke?
We've got a flood of Mexicans up here in MINNESOTA(!!!!) ,where it will soon be below freezing.
For every advance in Arizona, illegals just pour across the border faster in California...where the Border Patrol and local police are forbidden by liberal politicians and La-Raza racists from deporting said illegal immigrants.
Would you characterize Minnesota's government as being mostly Conservative or mostly Liberal?
If the latter...well, there's the reason.
Thanks for saving me the effort of posting. Sounds good, but a "long way to go." Still no word on what to do with the ones already here taking up oh-two and a bunch of other stuff.
Also, check out the environmental protest!!!
...more than three million illegals aliens per year crossing our Southern border...and stopping ten per cent of them is good?
If I break the law, I get fined and/or go to jail. They break international law and get free health care, schools, welfare, social security, the right to vote... by breaking still other laws by the use of fake documentation... if they even need that...
Minnesota doesn't have responsibility for border control.
Besides, its Republican House,Governor. Dems have the Senate.
Neither does California. That's the Federal Government's job. Your point?
Besides, its Republican House,Governor. Dems have the Senate.
I remember when I visited Minnesota earlier this year. The Minneapolis Star Tribune makes the L.A. Times look positively conservative in comparison. Truly weird.
50,000 illegals attempting the border a month? do we really need to question if new cells are already here? crank up homeland security - seal the borders and choke off the cells now!!!
eyes open all patriots!
Yes things are getting better all the time. Time magazine has an article that states 3.5 million illegals are now coming across the border every year.
If we improve things much more, the citizen will have to move out.
I just love government double-talk.

CRY ME A FREAKING RIVER! Good grief...
Some people are aliens in Americans' bodies, I'm convinced.
Thanks for saving me the effort of posting. Sounds good, but a "long, long, long, long way to go."

Moussaoui was held at the county jail not five minutes from one of our residences...Sherburne County Jail. There's a serious Muhammadan sleeper cell potential in Minnesota of all places. Muhammadans...they ain't just in South Florida no mo...
Truth be known, Ridge isn't truthful. He contradicts his very own people on the ground at the scene doing the work being told to shut up. I haven't any confidence in a single world Ridge says. If Ridge said it was sunny outside, I'd have to step outside or walk to a window first...
I am told Texas is conservative, yet they are flooded with millions of illegals, with hundreds of thousands pouring in routinely, generally unabated.
This problem won't be solved by the top of either Party in their current cofigurations...no way, no how.
