CNN handles Rush delivery with care (Rush is CNN anchor Daryn Kagan's 'boyfriend')
NY Daily News ^ | 10/6/04 | Lloyd Grove

It was a moment right out of a Hollywood romantic comedy.

"Breaking news from Florida," CNN anchor Daryn Kagan announced yesterday from Atlanta, shortly after 11 a.m. "For more on that, let's go to my colleague, Kyra Phillips."

As Kagan tossed to Phillips, she looked admirably composed.

That's because a Florida appeals court had just added to the legal woes of Kagan's boyfriend, Rush Limbaugh - upholding law officers' seizure of his medical records in a prosecution investigation of whether he illegally obtained painkillers.

"Rush Limbaugh's nightmare," CNN correspondent Susan Candiotti called the situation in the taped package that followed.

A few minutes later, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin opined: "Limbaugh isn't out of the woods. He's deeper in the woods."

Finally, Phillips tossed it back to Kagan. Understandably, she looked a little rattled.

CNN underwent scrutiny months ago when The Washington Post reported that married news exec Eason Jordan had been dating frequent on-air guest Mariane Pearl, widow of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl.

But yesterday's was an intriguing coincidence, not an ethical conflict, and CNN spokesman Matt Furman E-mailed me:

"CNN reported the story in a way that avoided even the appearance of a conflict of interest. Daryn Kagan handed off to another anchor, Kyra Phillips, who reported the story fully along with CNN's legal analyst Jeff Toobin and reporters John Zarrella and Susan Candiotti. When the Limbaugh report ended, Kyra tossed it back to Daryn.

"We value the trust our viewers place in us, and this was the right way to handle it, plain and simple."

Neither Kagan nor Limbaugh's publicist returned my phone calls yesterday.

Isn't this just too sweet.

You know as a professional journalist, she has a conflict of interest in reporting on Rush's case. Donna Kagan took herself out of commenting on the particulars of the case on the air.

What ever happened to Marta? When did his 3rd marriage fall a part?

I like Rush's show and having listened to him since 1988, he has taught me a lot. Alas, I fear that Rush's personal life is a train wreck. It is a shame that his audience cannot reach out and teach him a few things as well.

I still don't get what Rush is doing with Kagen, but that's his business.

CNN is probably upset that they couldn't be more gleeful in their reporting.

LOL. That's what they said last month when their romance became public news. Sorry for getting her first name wrong; its Daryn.

Who cares? I mean whatever Rush and Daryn do as a couple, that's their personal business.

CNN=Communist News Network

What's wrong with Rush? His personal life is nothing to brag about.

Yeah it doesn't bother me at all.
Rush and Daryn make a lot more sense to me than Snakehead Carville and Mary Matalin.

Marta hung around for the full ten years so her retirement would be fully vested. She lived well in the meanwhile.

Rush should stay single.

"I still don't get what Rush is doing with Kagen, but that's his business"

It's not too hard to figure out. Conservative women are mostly married. Besides, it sure beats banging a fence post, no matter how intellectually stimulating that might be.

Given his track record, you are probably right.

Rush is simply another member of the elitist world of entertainers, and we expect him to behave as though he is not?

That's laughable.

Rush announced his divorce from Marta last June.
