The Islamic Fundamentalist's thought processes, which got skewed in the 7th Century, were not considered 'the norm' prior to that time or in other monotheistic religions since that time, as far as my research can tell. That father in most other societies would be protecting his child not offering her up for money or some attempt at finding 'nirvana' with 72 maidens. What's a girl going to do with 72 maidens anyway???

A coupla points---
Females are classically viewed in Islam as evil by nature and barrier to men in communing with god. Family honor is carried on her shoulders, and any minor infraction demands her death.

Yeah, some men love their daughters, but a son is always viewed as the preferred child, even by his mother (who can, ironically, have more status in his married household than his wife).

The 72 virgins applies to males only. Females get the joyous privilege to be the 'caregivers' for the virgins (ain't that grand ;) )
