Inside Politics: Catholics vs. Kerry
The Washington Times ^ | October 6, 2004 | Greg Pierce

Posted on 10/06/2004 6:14:26 AM PDT by Pfesser

A Kerry Supreme Court would effectively disenfranchise Catholic voters, a coalition of Catholic lawyers and legal scholars said yesterday.

The coalition said Kerry-appointed Supreme Court justices would impose their personal opinions in striking down laws legitimately adopted by the political process that embrace traditional values.

"Catholics should understand the importance of this election and how the outcome could threaten core values of their faith. The next president may appoint two or even three of the nine sitting Supreme Court justices," said Shannen W. Coffin, a former Bush administration lawyer who organized the coalition.

"John Kerry has said he would apply a litmus test to his court nominees -- and we believe him," she said. "We hope this statement will make it clear what that litmus test will bring."

The statement, "Supreme Hostility: How A Kerry Supreme Court Would Affect Catholic Values," can be found at www.catholicaction.net/kerrycourtthreat.htm.

Senator Schumer and the Democrats has essentially called for a religious test for the judiciary, as we saw with Judge Prior -- no orthodox Catholics need apply because of their beliefs on abortion and homosexuality. Kerry would just be more of the same.

I think the big thing people don't realize is that Senator Kerry will face a very determined Christian evangelical community that does NOT want him elected. As a result, Kerry will likely suffer a major defeat.

Re#6 Methinks you are right. I read/heard that we may see 2-4 million more voting than in 2000. Prayers that the silent majority gets real active...

Being a Catholic, I am outraged by the lack of condemnation of Kerry's position on abortion. With the exception of a few quality priests such as the Bishop in St. Louis saying he would refuse to give Kerry Communion, why isn't the Church being more aggressive in pointing out Kerry's hypocrisy?

My message to Kerry is: "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36

As a devout Catholic, I've thought about this extensively too, but I think its because if they denied politicians who supported abortion only, it would be a political move. In order for them to legitimately start denying abortion proponents, they would have to start openly denying everyone who supports issues contrary to Church teaching (i.e. contraception). They would have millions of angry, angry American Catholics on their hands.

"Kerry is quite possibly the anti-Christ..."

NO doubt he is AGAINST the teachings of Christ but he is NOT the anti Christ. He isn't fooling too many people. Remember the anti Christ will be charisatic and charm people and almost fool the "elect". The "elect" are not fooled.

I think someday when believers get to heaven they will be surprised at who IS there and who is NOT there.
