I have never seen it so bad- I started out backing Goldwater in an area that was 80% Democrat, and that was nothing like this is now. It has gone beyond partisan, to purely rabid.
It is very disheartening. I can recall when Barry was running for the Senate and he visited the mine yard at shift change. Most of us miners were Mexican American and, at that date and time, would under no circumstances vote Republican. It was the last years of the openly Marxist Mine-Mill Union. However, everone gathered around, many actually wishing him good luck. He was a big hit. Now The two sides are on the edge of extensive violence. Many on the left are open about their admiration for the Islamists.
