VP's Claim About Meeting Edward's Debunked
Fox News ^ | 10/06/2004 | Associated Press

CLEVELAND — Vice President Dick Cheney (search) said Tuesday that the debate against Democratic Sen. John Edwards (search) marked the first time the two had met. In fact, the two had met twice previously. "Now, in my capacity as vice president, I am the president of Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session. The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight," Cheney told Edwards during the debate. In February 2001, the vice president thanked Edwards by name at a Senate prayer breakfast. Edwards aides also said the two met when the first-term North Carolina senator accompanied Elizabeth Dole (search) to her swearing-in by Cheney in January 2003. Edwards didn't forget. The Democratic vice presidential nominee noted the discrepency at a post-debate rally in a Cleveland park and used it as an example of Cheney "still not being stratight with the American people." "The vice president said that the first time I met Senator Edwards was tonight when we walked on the stage. I guess he forgot the time we sat next to each other for a couple hours about three years ago. I guess he forgot the time we met at the swearing in of another senator. So, my wife Elizabeth reminded him on the stage," Edwards said as the crowd roared. According to Edwards staff, Cheney replied, "Oh, yeah." "She reminded him about the truth," Edwards told the crowd, "and come November, we're going to remind him that the American people do not want four more years of George W. Bush." Cheney made the remark in accused Edwards of frequent absences from Senate votes.

For one, when John Edwards walked Elizabeth Dole down to be sworn in the process takes all of 2 minutes and in each case, there's a group of Senators from 3 states for these swearing ins, so that's easy to forget.

I can only think that Cheney's lack of remembrance shows how unremarkable Senator Edwards was to him.

I've seen John Edwards. He's not very memorable.

The Democrats shouldn't go there. If 2 people being in the same place and proximity mean that they met each other and had a genuine coversation, what does it say about this photo that Kerry's campaign downplayed???

SNOPES: Photograph shows John Kerry at a 1970 anti-war rally seated near Jane Fonda

Note: the photographer and Corbis do not allow FR to link the html of this photo. They don't seem to mind other websites stealing it and hosting it on their own servers.

F. Democrats.

Ah yes, weighty business on the senate. You know, where the grownups do the work while the kiddies campaign.

I hope the Rats emphasize this - it only reinforces the point that Edwards hasn't showed up for work.

So let me get this straight. Edward's pulls out a single meeting from 3 years ago, and wants to brag about it? If he's trying to defend a record of absence from the senate, that isn't a very convincing rebuttal.

He's trying to imply Cheney lied. More important is that Edwards shows up in the Senate so rarely that Cheney never sees him there--which is the IMPORTANT aspect of the comment.

Maybe if you'd go to the job you get paid for you wouldn't be so forgettable, Bouffant Boy.

This is not good. That was a line that made me suck in my breath with shock, during the debate. It was such a zinger that I can't believe it wasn't vetted before he used it. It makes me sad that the #1 sound bite was wrong. I wouldn't count the swearing in of Liddy because it doesn't sound like they really "met," but the Prayer breakfast photo really doesn't look good.

He was not worth remembering, if Cheney didn't remember him he didn't impress him

I saw Richard Nixon twice in my life. He even shook my hand once.

However, I can't claim that I ever "met" him.

How about at all the Senate hearings since then?

The substance is obviously true.

No, Cheney will be dismissed as a liar. Especially since it was such a wonderful zinger. He could have said it a little differently and still showed up Edwards's attendance w/o it seeming like a lie.

I don't think its wise for them to go there either. Edwards has been in the Senate for the past 3 years. Cheney has been the president of the Senate for the past 3 years. If the best that they can come up with is that 3 years ago they met briefly for 1 minute, it only reinforces Edwards lack of participation in the Senate.

Don't forget that Edwards sometimes channels the spirits of unborn babies from beyond the grave (wonder how that squares with supporting abortion). Perhaps it was only his body that Cheney briefly met, and not really Edwards.

WRONG

note that edwards never met him in the SENATE, like during a hearing or a session.

Ceremonial occasions don't count. Anyway, the point is Little Johnny like John F*ckin' was a time-server in the Senate with little to show for it. Record? One sought in vain to hear Edwards offer up a defense of his six years in the Senate.

Exactly, Senators should actually show up to work once in a while. As for Cheney remembering Edwards, meeting is different from just seeing someone a few times around, but not really meeting them.
