Reported drug bribe attempt gets an 'F'

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- A 17-year-old Wilsonville High School student has been accused of trying to bribe a teacher to alter attendance records so he could make a drug run.

Deputy Joel Manley, spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, said Friday that the student handed a note with some money to Matthew Courtney, who teaches English as a second language, promising to make him rich if he went along with the scheme.

Courtney reported the incident to Principal Andy Sommer, who called police. The student was arrested Thursday but later was released.

Authorities said the note said the student had taken orders for drugs from other students and had to go to Arizona and California to pick up a shipment.

"Never in my 26 years of police work have I ever heard of a student trying to bribe a teacher," said Sgt. Kim Klusmann.

He said he thought the amount of the intended bribe might have been less than $100.

He also said the Sheriff's Office was looking into whether the incident might be a hoax or practical joke.

If convicted as an adult of bribe-giving, a Class B Felony, the student could get as much as 20 years in jail and a fine of $250,000.

A deputy has been assigned to follow up on students who may have placed drug orders.

Klusmann said some of the drugs thought to be involved may be methamphetamines.

Public school even fails at adequately preparing those on the edges of the economy don't they? The teacher should have taken the bribe, given the money to the student prom fund and reported him absent anyway. How else does one learn?

That's probably because this kind of activity was not reported in the good old days. In fact I do not remember seeing a policeman in my grade school, junior high or high school once.

Stupid kid but 20 years in prison? Beyond ridiculous. I am sure glad I am not a kid today. That would totally suck. And this city has way too many cops.

Hello Black Dog...I am a student in the same class room that the student who bribed the teacher...and I know the teacher very well-and I think you are absoulutely retarded for this teacher to put the money in the student prom fund...The just to clarify the story, the teacher DID take the bribe and handed it to the principal for proof. This kid has made several drug runs before--and never got caught, so obviously this kid has never learned before--so what would make him learn now?
