More than 3,000 US and Iraqi troops have launched a major offensive on a rebel stronghold south of the capital, Baghdad, the US military says. More than 30 suspected insurgents were seized in the sweep of Babil region, according to US Central Command.
A press release says the forces also secured a bridge across the Euphrates River used by rebels moving in and out of key Iraqi cities.
No casualties have so far been reported among the assault force.
Greetings, fellow Freepers, lurkers, Patriots, and all USA-loving folks!
This is the new media speaking, and we are growing faster than a pond full of guppies. The old media is deadthey just dont know it yet. But they are starting to sense it, and are panicking.
The genie is out of the bottle. The internet now has hundreds of millions of fact-checkers, lie detectors, and cool brainiacs in their pajamas, laughing our butts off at the lame attempts of the journalism majors on TV to spin things their way.
The media wing of the democrat party is dying. CBS, ABC, NBC, all except FOX are tanking in their ratings, losing money, and dying a slow, welcome death.
Who broke the Dan Rather phony document story? One of our braniacs here, in pajamas, Buckhead. The th heard round-the-world ignited blew Dan out of the water in a couple of hours.
For those of you new here, this is not uncommon. Free Republic has over 100,000 registered users, and a whole lot more than that come here every day. We have scientists, brilliant PhDs, gun owners, good-ole-small business owners, Capitalists, meat-eaters, and some of the most brilliant in the media. Yes, they lurk here, too. They know that Free Republic breaks stories faster, and more accurately, than any site, or any media, in the world.
Thanks to Jim Robinson, the founder. He was sick of the Clinton lies and crimes, and did something about it. He started this site. At first it barely survived, and Jim put his money where his mouth is. He almost lost his house. Some of us early folks here remember mailing checks in, to keep it running. We knew how important this place is, and now the world knows.
Feel like throwing a brick through your TV every time you watch CNN? Do something about it. Dont just lurk, jump in with us. Become part of history, and tell your grandkids you were one of the early supporters. Yes, this is early. Very early. Believe it or not, this site is only 6 years old. When you look back in 20 years, you will be proud to have been a part of the founding.
Please join us, and contribute. Do it by credit card. Become a monthly donorjust send $3 a month. Thats all it takes. Think your $3 a month wont make a difference? You are wrong. It makes all the difference in the world. Just like this site. And when you see your name on the monthly donor list, you will feel so proud! Its amazing how it lifts you up, to know that you are making a difference.
I know that for some of you, even that small amount hurts. Ive been there, believe me. But when you see that line item in your credit card bill every month, you will smile from ear-to-ear, and know that you are actually making a difference in this screwed-up world.
Come on in, and join us, and lets change the world!
GO GO GO!
Kill 'em all and end this thing before our election so Kerry can be heard and seen saying that this action to remove terrorists was not a good thing....
I love it....
I'm sure our Secretary Of State will demand a halt to this retaliatory foray! ;-)
I guess we'll push into Fallujah just about time for the election. A sitting Administration always has an advantage because they can control events. From a strategic perspective it makes perfect sense to hit em hard now. They can't hit back in the US because it would help get Mr. Bush re-elected. They might hit back after the election and if it's Kerry, well he'll have to show resolve or he'll be in a world of hurt domestically.
Not cynical, very pragmatic.
We are kicking terro butt. Too bad 35 little children had to die to fire up the Iraqi people against these so-called jihadists.
We are firing it up despite the "risks" of Bush taking a hit in the polls. Just because it's the right thing to do, it's the right time, and we are doing it in the right places. Working beside the new Iraqi army. Seventeen months after taking Baghdad.
Prayers for our troops. Prayers for our President. Prayers for our country.
GOD BLESS AND KEEP SAFE ALL
THE BRAVE TROOPS FROM ALL NATIONS WHO ARE IN HARMS WAY
Is this the biblical Babel? Does anyone know?
Our guys can do the job, if they will just let them.
Let the bodies hit the floor!
What's interesting to me is that the "insurgents" now appear to have lost an important tactical advantage: being able to blend into the local populace when attacked. The majority of locals have gone from adding and abetting to ratting these guys out, if not actually killing them themselves.
I'm having my recurring dream.
Just before the debate starts, Vice-President Cheney is handed a note telling him that Zarqawi and his band of evil beheaders have been captured and have requested that they may die for Allah.
But but but ... John Kerry said Bush and our military doesn't know how to fight a real fight
yes it is. check this out.

I have just turned it from your recurring dream to my fervent prayer.
It's kinda funny that this is happening in Babil (or Babel) which is where Hammurabi was from. As we all know, he supported 'equal retaliation.' So basically, we're practicing this code in the very place it was born!
Geez, I'm a nerd....
Just an FYI (slightly off topic):
Bremmer said on ABC some time ago that he NEVER REQUESTED ADDITIONAL TROOPS!
AMBASSADOR L. PAUL BREMER: No, I've never made a request for more troops that's been agreed to. I never made a request for more troops. I agree with the CENTCOM Commander John Abizaid, who said earlier this week in a press conference that he believes we have enough troops here. I think that's right. It's not a question of more troops, it's a question of being effective with our intelligence, getting more Iraqis to help us. There are more than 50,000 Iraqis now working with us on security matters in the police and the border guards and the civil defense corps, and in the new Iraqi army. So Iraqis are more and more assuming responsibility for their security here.

Just love those super & sub scripts.
