Dan Rather just found a proportionally typed memo from John Kerry's mom dated back in 1974 which congratulates her son on running the Boston Marathon.

"John Kerry said, 'I remember my first Boston Marathon ... it's a great run.'"

Remembering your first Boston Marathon when you watched it on a big screen television while cozied up in an imported leather easy chair onboard your yacht moored off the pier of your European villa is not the same as running in the Boston Marathon, Kerry.

The Boston Marathon is THE BIG DEAL for Marathoners. I qualified for it @ the Portland Marathon in September, 1990.

Although I did not run Boston in 1991, just qualifying for it was one of the milestone events of my life.

Kerry, once again, is a liar....

I suspect Kerry's full of crap. Nobody just runs a marathon. It takes dedication...running regularly, practicing a certain way. And nobody forgets. If you run a marathon ONCE it will be especially "seared" in your memory, it's that tough and therefore that much of an accomplishment. Typically, runners are very proud of it, never forget their time let alone the date...my impression is that runners who are advanced enough to tackle a marathon tend to get fixated on details: time, pace, training methods, shoes, etc.

BINGO BOYS AND GIRLS!! Playing Sports The Right Way By Jeff Merron Page 2 http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=merron/040830

The Marathoner in Chief

Though injuries have reduced his running during his presidency, Bush has a treadmill on Air Force One and goes for hour-long jaunts on it in the air during overseas trips. In January, 1993, he finished the Houston Marathon in 3:44:52 (that's about an 8:30 pace); he's the only president ever to complete that distance. (Kerry claims to have run in, and finished, the Boston Marathon "in '80, something like that" -- but there's no official record of his feat, and his campaign did not provide further details despite repeated inquiries.)

My daughter ran a maraton and let me tell you, it's not something you forget. You know your time and you sure as heck know the year.

This is so sad. Kerry is one sick individual. You look up the definition of narcissism in the dictionary and it says: a personality disorder characterized by the patient’s overestimation of his or her own appearance and abilities and an excessive need for admiration. Then it shows his picture.

As President (God forbid) what will he give away in order to gain the admiration of the UN, France and Germany? Oh, not to mention North Korea, because he would of course be able to have successful bilateral negotiations with them to suspend their Nuke program.

Two other instances of Kerry's claim to have run Boston are here and here. You'll have to scroll down a bit and his comments are really asides to the articles. The first article is by Roger Simon, the Chief Political Correspondent for US News and World Report. The second article dates back to 2002, so this is apparently not a new claim.

You'd think the list of entrants still exists somewhere for an enterprising reporter to dig up...

http://www.rogersimon.com/archive/000292.html

http://www.dailyfreepress.com/news/2002/04/16/News/17000.From.Across.Globe.Begin.106th.Boston.Marathon-237930.shtml?page=2

The quote from the second site, so you don't have to register:

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who fired the starter's pistol, also expressed his admiration for the runners. He lamented the fact that time constraints had made it impossible for him to run in the Marathon, which he participated in 20 years ago.

"I love the Marathon," he said. "I admire everyone. To run, it takes a lot of spirit and a lot of guts."

And in a surprise announcement, the Kerry campaign announced today that John Kerry had also won an Olympic Gold Medal in the javelin toss back in '72 or '80, something like that; however, clearly someone in the Bush camp has not only stolen the original medal, but the Olympic records as well. John Kerry did locate the ribbon which held the medal which is seared, seared in his mind as having been placed around his neck.

http://www.bluestatesforbush.com/ Follow up notes: 9/29/04. According to Hal Higdon's Boston: A Century of Running, (page 193) from 1975-1979, runners in Kerry's age group would need to have run a 3:00 marathon in certified race to be accepted as an entrant in the Boston Marathon. In 1980, that standard was dropped to the virtually unattainable 2:50 minutes.

Although as an "unofficial entrant," Senator Kerry would not have had to complete a marathon in a qualifying time.
