Capt. Dennis Fitzpatrick will assume command of the USS John F. Kennedy today in a ceremony aboard the Jacksonville-based aircraft carrier as it sails in the Persian Gulf, according to the Navy.
"We will have a change of command [on Tuesday]," said Lt. Leslie Hull-Ryde, spokeswoman for the Kennedy, in an e-mail from the ship.
At first, the Navy didn't want to confirm whether Fitzpatrick was the next commander until the ceremony was completed. But his father, Gene Fitzpatrick of Delmar, N.Y., told the Times-Union in a phone interview Monday, "As of tomorrow, he will be in charge."
Gene Fitzpatrick said his son learned about becoming the commander of the 36-year-old carrier about a month ago. He flew out to the ship, which has been deployed since June, about two weeks ago, Gene Fitzpatrick said.

Given it's the USS Kennedy (named after an Irish demoncRAT) and the new skipper is named Fitzpatrick, wonder if the new skipper is also demoncRAT?
Probably until CVN-77 Bush and CVN-X ?? are activated (several years after it's 'built').

Does anyone know after who or what they are going to name the CVN-X, Clinton? I can see the nickname sailors will give it.
That is by choice there is a pipeline that has to be taken in order to be a skipper of a carrier and there are not many women that have met all of the qualifications. One of them is that you have to be a senior aviator with a certian amount of carrier flight time. Women have just started flying jets and carrier based aircaft not that long ago that is why you don't see female skippers of carriers yet.
There wouldn't be a USS anything under Kerry.
All our ships would become UNS, and the names would be changed to honor his hero's.
The USS Reagan would become the UNS Marx, etc.

The CVN-X is named "USS Hillary Clinton" in the current sci fi book, "Choice of Weapons."
