Is this a type/name of surface vessel or a reference to Canadian military leadership? ;^)

Did you see "The Hunt for Red Otober? I believe that was a nimrod the West was running in that movie.

While the term 'Nimrod' has taken on negative connotations in the modern world, it hasn't always been so. Nimrod was a mighty hunter/man of history. The negative refers to those who sought to emeulate him and fell short. Also sounds cool as a disparaging remark.
