NRCC Chairman Sees Chance for Democratic Takeover of House Shrinking

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds (R-NY) assessed House races in the final month before the November election at a briefing for reporters on Monday. He sees a shrinking number of competitive contests, which bodes well for his party since Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives.

He said, "The odds just keep getting better to keep the House."

Reynolds pointed out that most political experts agree that there are less than 35 seats that are in play. Republicans hold 214 "safe" seats, while Democrats will likely retain 187.

He said that a recent decision by the NRCC's counterpart, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, to cut back in 11 media markets shows that it is giving up on some contests.

Reynolds chided House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for clinging to a belief that her party will regain the majority after a decade of Republican control. He said that Pelosi's claim was "an empty promise that her candidates can't keep."

Meanwhile, Reynolds said the NRCC would step up its efforts to support candidates across the country. He said that the fundraising advantage his party enjoys is becoming even more pronounced and will accrue to candidates in competitive races.

The NRCC chairman touted his "Three C" agenda as the formula for success. He said the first "C" is the strong candidates recruited to challenge for available seats. Another "C" is for cash on hand, and the third is for case, which is the record of achievement Republicans have developed over the last two years.

Reynolds discussed several specific races and told Talon News that he wasn't concerned about voter fraud in South Dakota. Allegations of election irregularities during the 2002 Senate race resulted in legislation that requires voters to show identification before casting a ballot. Reynolds said he was satisfied that safeguards have been put in place that would help to ensure a fair election in the race that pits Democrat Stephanie Herseth against Republican Larry Diedrich.
