'Team America': Sex, Puppets & Controversy
FOX News ^ | 5 October, 2004 | Roger Friedman

Posted on 10/05/2004 6:43:10 AM PDT by Servant of the 9

Try to imagine, if you will, a movie that in its first few minutes offends just about everyone who's watching it.

Then you have "Team America: World Police," the new outrageous and controversial new comedy from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of "South Park."

Even as we speak, several prominent Hollywood actors may be calling their lawyers to check on slander laws. GLAAD is certainly drafting a press release condemning the film, and North Korean madman Kim Jong II may have a case as well.

..................

"Team America," as you may know, is performed by marionettes.........  .............they made a Jerry Bruckheimer-like action movie that was really a spoof, with lots of explosions, coarse, vulgar language and enough offbeat sexual situations to rile the MPAA?

This is a movie so rough that should, by some strange happenstance, its theme song be nominated for an Oscar — as "Blame Canada" was from the "South Park" movie — there is no way it could actually be performed at the Academy Awards. .........................

The group of air-headed puppets, led by Alec Baldwin, is dubbed the Film Actors Guild (and referred to by its unfortunate acronym).

Among his liberal associates are usual suspects Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Danny Glover, Janeane Garofalo, George Clooney, Ethan Hawke, Matt Damon .........

I am told that none of these actors gave permission for their likenesses to be used. Most will not be amused by their depictions.

......................

The Parker/Stone version of Kim Jong II nearly overtakes the film as the terrorist-hunting switches from the Arab world to Korea.
..............

Paris, most of Egypt and plenty of other landmarks are blown up, all so Team America can, as their credo goes, "put the F back in freedom."

From a related article in the Guardian

Puppet oral sex goes against grain for US censors

The makers, directors Matt Stone and Trey Parker and producer Scott Rudin, are contesting the MPAA classification, saying that the film doesn't show anything that's not been seen before in other R-rated movies. And besides, Rudin told the Hollywood Reporter, "our characters are made of wood and have no genitalia. If the puppets did to each other what we show them doing, all they'd get is splinters."

Parker pointed to the differences between the MPAAs treatment of simulated violence and simulated sex. Team America features violent scenes in which a Tim Robbins puppet is set on fire and a Susan Sarandon puppet is dropped off a 20-story building - all acts that passed MPAA muster.

"We blow Janeane Garofalo's head clean off, [but for the MPAA] it's all about the positions of the dolls having sex," Parker said. "It's not funny - it's tragic."

You can't have a South Park-related thread without letting O.C. - Old Cracker know.

It's his favorite show, you know.

OK, that seals the deal. I'm going to the premier.

I haven't been to a movie theater since "Chicago" in Feb 2003 but I think I will have to see this one. It sounds offensive, but funny. One of its biggest boosters is radio show host Phil Hendrie, who may even be doing a voice in the film. Phil is an unabashed supporter of the Iraq war and the WOT, though he remains a Democrat. If Phil endorses the film, it must be on target. :)

Michael Moore has hot dogs in both his hands and is perpetually mustard stained. That should give you an idea of the theme of the movie.

I read a long article about this movie in Newsweek or Time (in the doctor's waiting room)

The gist of the story is that this movie skewers the left more than the right. In fact, in the end, love of country and freedom prevail.

The movie is brutal to the Hollywood left.

They must be tweaking it up to the last minute, as to include the current events. They are good about that. They've got fast turn around times on current topics.

The Janet Reno Easter Bunny episode of South Park was done in 3 days!

Whoa, I will NOT be watching this with my kids that's for sure. My husband and I joke about Matt and Trey and how they are "equal opportunity offenders". You either love this kind of humor or you hate it. Reading Fox's article, this struck me as funny:

"The plot: In short, a CIA-type organization hires a Broadway musical actor to pretend to be an Arab terrorist and infiltrate terrorist organizations. (In the end, the world is safe, the movie claims, thanks to brilliant acting. Ouch)... Team America, you see, boldly goes where no one has gone before, sending up post-9/11 terrorism, Arabs, Koreans, the CIA and liberal-minded Hollywood actors all at the same time... Baldwin, in particular, comes in for a lot of baiting, as he is often referred to facetiously as "the greatest actor in the world... Hopefully, Susan Sarandon won't mind when she gets her head blown off... The group of air-headed puppets, led by Alec Baldwin, is dubbed the Film Actors Guild (and referred to by its unfortunate acronym)."

Sorry, I know this movie is going to be way, way, WAY over the top - but sometimes you just have to laugh and say "what the hell".
