2 Texans dig deep for boat vet ads

WASHINGTON - Two Texas businessmen with a history of supporting Republican causes gave $3 million last week to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group trying to sink the presidential campaign of Democrat John Kerry.

Harold Simmons, a Dallas billionaire investor, made two $1 million donations to the group and Dallas oilman Boone Pickens, who earlier this summer gave $500,000, kicked in another $1 million last week.

The Texans' deep pockets have helped the veterans group air television advertisements attacking Kerry's Vietnam War record in states considered key to winning the White House.

Simmons and Pickens are among the top national contributors to 527 political organizations, so-called because of their designation under the federal tax code.

Simmons has given $2.5 million and Pickens $2 million to Progress for America, a group that is airing television ads claiming that Kerry's position on issues changes with the wind. The ads depict Kerry windsurfing.

Reports filed late last week by the Swift Boat Veterans indicate that, in addition to Simmons and Pickens, about a dozen Texans chipped in more than $370,000 over the past two weeks.

Another 527 group with Texas connections — Texans for Truth — reported receiving $19,000 in donations with none of the money coming from residents of Texas.

Good news. I'm from Texas and I just gave them some money yesterday too, but not so much as these guys.

Boone Pickens has contributed millions of dollars to my two favorite causes -- Oklahoma State University(his alma mater and mine) and the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth. I wish I could find his address to send him a letter of thanks. The man uses his money wisely.

If George Soros can contribute big bucks, well its about time for the Republicans to do the same. I also contribute--much, much less--but lets keep the smaller donations going. We can all do our part, large or small.

The Dems have told us about rich Republicans for all these years and their guy Soros has been the biggest contributer of them all. It's about time our guys started ponying up. A few weeks ago the Swifties had rec'd about $6m from 53k people. Wonder what the totals are now?

I've noticed a continous barrage of Swift Boat Vet ads here in Pennsylvania.

I mean, nonstop, nearly every commercial break yesterday the ad with the wives of POWs was played.

The Swiftees are rumored to have an "October Surprise" waiting in the wings. Any ideas on what it might be? Dishonorable Discharge for JF'ngKerry, or maybe documentation of War Crimes?

Maybe there are pictures of Kerry burning & urinating on the flag. Didn't that rumor come out just before the first debate? Maybe it was to worry Kerry & throw him off at the debates. If he did do that, I hope we have pictures of it, and I hope he denies it ever happened first, so the world will see what a liar Kerry is.

I have not seen any ads here in WA state lately. I'm glad they're not wasting their money here. Most of my state is for Republicans. We are controlled by a few big counties and we can't stand them! They are different as night and day from the rest of us. Too bad, Eastern WA can't dump the guys on the other side of the mountains and join Idaho.

I hadn't heard the story about Kerry burning and urinating on the flag, but I wouldn't put it past him. If it is true, unfortunately it didn't seem to throw him off in the first debate.
